MissPhish:  Wear purple and put your BMs in champagne or silver.  If you rock the dress nobody will doubt that you’re the bride.  I wore red for my reception at my first wedding and I really wish that i had ditched the white dress I wore for my ceremony and just worn the red dress all day.

Like you i am not one for white. I am also plus sized and my wedding dress is cafe colored with a burgundy sash and bow.

I think the purple dress is very cute. Not too much a fan of the green tho.

The problem I would have with that dress is that it looks a bit casual with also being not white (the bridesmaid dresses look just as fancy).  A guest could show up in the same dress or one very similar.  I think if you go with a colored gown I think you need much more of a show stopper dress than the one you selected.  Maybe even a colored dress that has more “bridal” attributes such as a train or a fuller skirt.

I would at least try on gowns of more “bridal colors.”  Try off-whites, ivorys, champagnes, blush, etc.   I never wear light colors either.  I’m Irish and Scottish, so I look completely washed out and almost sickly in light colors, however bridal dresses are available in such a ridiculously large amounts of shades of “whites” that I was shocked that I found a particular shade of ivory that made my skin look radiant.  I’m not saying a bride should definitely wear white, I think a bride should wear whatever it is that makes her feel beauitful (I considered color dresses myself), I just think they should choose a dress that makes them stand out from other guests and maybe one that they couldn’t just go and wear to attend someone else’s wedding the next week (I think it is a beautiful dress for a guest or a mother of the bride).

It seems like you are only really looking online, and even if you ultimately plan to buy your dress online you really need to try on all sorts of formal gowns and wedding dresses in person to see how you really invision yourself.

I say go with colour if that’s what you really want! I’m sure Fiance will be happy no matter what you wear! I’m plus size as well, and I found a lace dress in ivory that I loved! Ive had mixed responses on here about if it’s actually flattering or not (I have big hips and a bigggg butt hahah) but I love it and that’s what really matters!!

mgbser:  I agree

it doesn’t scream “bride” to me even it it was longer. It could be different colors, but it really needs to stand out from just being someone who can wear it to any wedding. like the poser above me, you should go in and check out different bridal dresses to see which ones would suit your style 🙂

MissPhish:  is really like it if your bridesmaids were wearing white / ivory dresses. That woul still make it feel very bridal for your fiancé.

Also I would suggest a dress that has more of a bridal feel to make it a nice compromise for you and your fiancé. I feel that with the dress you posted, he may indeed not be 100% on board if he always pictured you looking traditional. There are a lot of more “plain” wedding dresses without poof, rouching and what have you. If you got one of those in purple, the dress would still look much more the traditional bride. If you stay with the above dress, how about a sash in ivory?

Having said that, I’m sure you’re fiancé will be thrilled with whatever choice you make.

I wore a colored dress at my first wedding, and I honestly regretted my choice. I was happy with it at the time, it was in Vegas, etc. But then when I got the pictures back, I didn’t feel like they were wedding pictures. I kinda felt like they looked like formal pictures, with a very nice dress. I feel like I would have been happier in a ivory or champagne dress, with accent colors. Something like a belt, or color with a lace overlay, colored crinoline, you get the idea.

Especially if you like a shorter dress, I think an ivory or white dress with a purple belt and purple tulle showing would look gorgeous, and have both the bridal look that he wants, and the color you want.
