- Wedding: September 2012
Wedding Date 9/29/12
Venue–> HIGHLY RECOMMEND: The Other Barn Loft for reception space and the courtyard for the ceremony. The courtyard is an outside space that fits approx 175 guests. The loft holds 220. The only slight issue is that the courtyard and loft are “owned” by different associations so you have to deal with both of them to book/hold the space. There is no fee for the courtyard but you do have to buy and show event insurance, I got it through my auto carrier for $40 so that wasn’t so bad. We paid less than $2000 for the loft for friday night and all day Saturday, they set up tables and chairs but you have to decorate and tear down your decorations. Susan at the Other Barn was great to work with.
Rehearsal Dinner–> RECOMMEND: Gunnings, great seafood, service was fine and we had our own room.
DJ–> HIGHLY RECOMMEND: Coast2Coast out of Greencastle PA. Mike was absolutely fabulous to work with. He even emailed me a few times during my planning process to check in and see if I needed anything from him. He provides a worksheet that you fill out and submit to him with everything he needs. He was just fantastic and at the end of the night he even gave me cd’s with music from our ceremony/entrance and reception. He was so responsive during the reception and whatever I asked him to do he did immediately.
Cake–> RECOMMEND: Baltimore Cakery. The cake was FANTASTIC so if you want a good tasting cake I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this place. The reason I gave only recommend is because the entire time they were a little unorganized. We showed up for our tasting which we booked an appt for but they weren’t expecting us?? Then after we sent in our deposit I called in and they couldn’t find our paperwork and asked if I had sent the deposit (the check had been cashed weeks prior). They ended up finding it. Then 2 weeks before the wedding I had to drop off the topper and ribbon so I called ahead and asked to have a tasting of our flavors again just to make sure we still liked them. When I arrived they only had 1 of our 3 flavors for me to taste. THEN on the actual wedding day my cake was wrong. It was supposed to be 3 tiers, bottom and top tier square and middle tier round. THEY WERE ALL SQUARE, but it tasted soo good I can’t complain.
Photographer–>HIGHLY RECOMMEND: Katie Leigh Photography. Katie was great but has moved to NY so she won’t be serving this area any longer. We booked her prior to her move and she still honored our contract which did not include travel expenses. She uses natural lighting and is easy to work with. We loved her. Used her for our epics as well.
Accomodations–>Doubltree By Hilton Columbia–>RECOMMEND. They gave us a great deal for our guests and we were able to set up our own webpage for our guests to book through. They had a shuttle that ran to our venue for free. They also had a bar and restaurant for breakfast. The only issue I had was that they changed the shuttle times for my guests. I had to put my foot down 2 times to make sure they had the correct times. AND there was only one mirror in our king suite! No full length mirror for a bride putting on a gown 🙁
Chocolate Covered Strawberries–>Dutch’s Daughter in Frederick–RECOMMEND–we purchased these as an additional dessert for our guests. They were great. I had a family member pick them up and take them to the venue. The only issue was after the fact they over charged me. I was quoted a price and they over charged me by $80, I called and it was rectified.
Caterer–> Famous Dave’s–> DO NOT RECOMMEND–Let me just say first that the food was GREAT, the service leading up to the actual day was also great but the day of service was TERRIBLE! The coordinator I was working with leading up to the day was Jackie Chembars and she is fantastic. Everything seemed to be in order, however on the day of the person who showed up acted as if she had no idea what was going on. I was about to walk down the aisle and she was asking me where the food was supposed to go and that they only had enough set ups for one line instead of two. I basically told her to do whatever she needed just as long as my guests go fed. We also paid for a bartender. We had 2 kegs and wine to pour… EASY right?? well the girl acted like it was too hard and she fell behind so fast that my uncle had to pull out the kegs and make them self serve! Why did I pay for a bartender? They ended up doing two lines for the food but we paid for all of our guests to have mashed potatoes and mac n cheese BUT one line had the potatoes and no mac n cheese and the other had mac n chees and no potaotes!! I am so mad about this! Also as the end of the night they didn’t leave any to go boxes so we threw out tons of food that our guests could have taken or even us. Overall, as I said the service was terrible but the food itself was great.
Dress–>David’s Bridal–>RECOMMEND–I went through the Hagerstown David’s and I had a great experience. I had them do my alterations and they even added buttons on my dress. I think the alterations were pricey but my mom insisted on having them done there. I am sure I could have gotten them done for 1/3 of the price somewhere else.
Florist–Wessel’s–RECOMMEND–This is one where the communication leading up to the day was terrible but the end result was GORGEOUS. We went for our consultation and provided a budget, I was very dismayed when the original quote I recv’d after our visit was 3 times the budget. I requested another quote and was given one that was better but still over budget. I decided to go with them b/c Dave really understood my “vision”. We had some miscommunication about final payment but we figured that out ok. I provided the vases and I dropped them off 1 week before my wedding. I then got a call 2 days before my wedding from Dave asking where my vases were?!?! I was a little freaked out but on the day off our flowers were soo gorgeous!! They were just as I wanted and beautiful. Dave surely does beautiful work if you don’t mind mediocre communication.
I think that about covers all the big things… Let me know if you have any questions about any of these vendors, I’d be glad to help.
