So I have stopped taking my pill since Sunday night. I have never had a break from it since I was 16 and I’m now 32. I want to give my body a break from it before we start to try for a baby. Any advice on what I can expect? I originally went off it as I got pimples as a teenager but I’m hoping that was just a puberty thing and I’m not going to get them all back after so long. I know I feel like I don’t have a sex drive so I am hoping being off the pill will improve this. I have started taking Elevit which is a multivitamin that you take specifically before trying to conceive as it has the folic acid etc that you need. Any other tips/advice I should know before we actually start trying and what was your experience coming off the pill?

I recently came off the pill after 15+ years on it. Had no idea what to expect. My cycle has been pretty standard and regular (it was much more unpredictable when I was a teenager). No problems with breaking out or major hormonal swings as far as I can tell. I have had some bouts of naseau (which led to crazy symptom spotting the first time it happened!) but one of my apps tells me other women report this during their cycle so maybe linked to coming off the pill?
I think every body is different but hoping yours will be a smooth transition and pimple free. Good luck!!

I too just stopped taking the pill after 12+ years on it. 3 days in and I’m bleeding a lot. More than spotting, it’s like a period. I have had a menstrual headache the last couple days. That’s about all I can report so far. Hoping I don’t breakout like I did as a teenager I heard that can happen though.

I got off BC in August after 13 years. I had irregular periods as a teenager, which is why I was on it in the first place. I wasn’t sure if my body would regulate quickly or take awhile, so I started using an app to help track my period which was very helpful. Luckily, I got my first period after 35 days, then fell into normal 28-30 day cycles after that. I definitely notice I have more PMS symptoms now, and my periods are slightly heavier, but I’m still much happier being off the pill. It’s totally a mental thing, but it’s nice knowing I’m allowing my body to naturally do it’s thing each month without interfering.

dannytanner : did you stop taking it right after you finished your period?

I took the pill for about 12 years. I tried a lot of different types in that time, but I’d always end up continually bleeding and in a lot of pain. I tried to come off a couple of times, but my natural periods were a nightmare too. I switched to mirena when I was 29 and got rid of it about 2 years later after piling on a lot of weight, and went on the mini pill. I’ve been off that for almost 4 months now as we are TTC, and at 32 I feel much better! Better than ever. My periods returned almost immediately and are tolerable and my skin is clear. It’s easier to lose weight now, I’m not retaining a shit load of water and I think my sex drive is on the up. It was aways super high, but took a crash around the time my coil came out. Anyway. It’s been lovely not being on contraception! I hope mother nature goes easy on you too. Good luck with your upcoming baby making!

I came off the pill in July, after 12 years, and now it’s 6 months later and I haven’t had any periods! I did have irregular periods before going on it, but had no issues with my periods whilst on the pill. I’ve also found my skin breaking out again, so for me it hasn’t been the best experience so far but I have other friends in similar situations and they haven’t had any issues. Everyone is different I guess!
Will be seeing a dermatologist for my skin now and seeing a doctor to look into my lack of period.
The good news for me is that my sex drive has improved and my weight is easier to manage!

aquastar : No I actually stopped taking it in the middle of my pack. I had missed 2 days (oops!) and just decided I should quit it now since I was planning on doing that soon anyways. My period was 2 weeks ago.

I have been on birth control for 15 years, first Depo for two years, then I got off it and didn’t have a period for a year. Finally it came and I had a normal period for one year before I went on the pill. Stay on low dose estrogen pills for six years straight. Then I got Mirena, after five years I got my second Mirena.
Hoping to TTC in 2-3 years so I am very interested in how my body will react when I get it taken out…
I feel like there should be some longitudinal studies about birth control for 10+ years and TTC. I will search some databases.

teacher-bee-in-the-sea : it would be interesting. I’ve changed pills about 3 times over the 15 years as the monophasals gave me morning sickness so I’ve been on a tri-phasal pill the last few years which didn’t make me so sick. It has 3 different levels of hormones and they’re on the lower dosage level so they wouldn’t make me so nauseas. I am seeing my doctor this arvo to let him know I’ve come off the pill and if there’s anything I need to do to prepare myself for conceiving apart from the multivitamin I’m taking

I took the pill for 10 years before stopping to get ready to TTC. I didn’t get my cycle back after 6 months and learned I had PCOS. Obviously my experience isn’t the norm, but in my case the pill was hiding a health problem 🙁

I stopped a year ago after being on it for over 15 years. I just did not start a new pack. My acne came back a little, but I found some Paula’s Choice products that helped immensely. I did not gain or loose weight. Sex drive increased. My cycle calendar back regularly right away. We avoided getting pg for 6 months, and then got pg 4 months after that.

aquastar : I went off about a year ago after being on the pill for 10 years. No noticeable symptoms for me except the acne. Oh the acne 🙁 I’ve gotten my face under control but chest/back still awful and trying to figure out what’ll work!

I’ll be going off in September after the wedding. I’ve also been on the pill for 11 years, and have CRAZY anxiety about my skin breaking out. I had very difficult skin as a teenager, and dread having acne again. My plan is to follow up with my primary to confirm I can still use a topical benzoyl peroxide cream (which manages my skin best) and pray 😉. I have two very close women in my life (FSIL & best man’s wife) and neither reported acne going off the pill. However I’m not sure how their skin was as teenagers but they did not notice an increase. Good luck!

I just came off the pill one year ago after being on it since I was 15. I’m now 25. Things I noticed/experienced:
1. I skipped one period after coming off the pill but have regular since. However I do see that stress majorly affects my cycles.
2. It was so much easier for me to lose the weight I wanted.
3. I noticed no change in my skin.
4. The length of cycles didn’t really change. I went from a 3 day period to maybe 5. Which wasn’t a big deal for me.
5. I overall feel better. I do not regret it at all. I went off to give my body a break and to prepare myself for child rearing in 2017.
