- Wedding: August 2018
Hi Bees! I was engaged back in August and actually am already married now (always wanted to elope in the Fall so thats what we did- why wait??) but never got to share my super surprising engagement here!
We had just gotten back from a trip in my favorite national park (Glacier!) over my birthday and figured if he was going to propose he would have done it there since we hiked to some mindblowing vistas. But he didnt and honestly, I wasnt looking for it and wasnt expecting it since we had been legal domestic partners for over a year and neither of us were/are particularly wedding motivated.
So back home we have tickets to see a Bela Fleck and the Flecktones show an hour away from us. About 3h before the show, Im dressed but just hanging out in the garden when DH demands we go walk the dog now. I respond “ee dont need to walk the dog today. We have to get going in a bit and the dog had a long hike yesterday. She looks tired still.”
“No, we really should walk the dog.”
“Fine, but lets just walk her on the trail behind the house”
“No! We NEED to take her on a gorge trail!”
“Why?? She doesnt care where she walks! Shes a dog!”
“SHE LIKES WATER, OK. GORGE HIKE NOW!”
I caved, although I was pretty mystified as to why we HAD to do a gorge hike RIGHT NOW before the show for the dog, but whatever. Got shoes on and we drove to a nearby state park gorge to walk the dog that just HAD to go play in the water.
It was afternoon on a week day at a quieter park so no one else was on the trail with us. I was enjoying how peaceful it was, holding hands, laughing at the dog running in and out of the water. As we were walking, he keeps wanting to go down and explore/play in various waterfalls which we do all the time, but every time we start to go down to a fall, he decides its just not good enough. We hadnt rained too recently so I guess some of the smaller falls, the water level was just not acceptable for his proposal purposes haha. Eventually, we find a fall that hes satisfied “the dog will like” so we head on down and splash around a bit. He suggests we take a family photo- me, him, and dog so I go round up dog in front of one of the cascades and start cheesing it up for a picture while he sets up his phone against a rock on the side of the gorge. He tells me he set the phone to take pics every 10 seconds then comes on over. As we’re posing, he does it out of nowhere! Drops to one knee, tells me how amazing our life is together, how much he loves me, and proposes! It was amazing. His phone wasnt taking pictures, it was filming a video and its gorgeous. As we were crying and laughing over it all, the dog that just NEEDED to play in the water totally blows us off to go run up and down the trail a bit while we’re still in the water which is hilarious to watch in the video. She literally takes off the second he gets on one knee. He wanted to propose when we were home, with our dog, doing something we love where we love and have started our lives.
Eventually we rounded the dog up, headed home, cleaned up, and went to the show. We almost didnt go we were glowing so much. We told EVERYONE we just got engaged that day- the bartender, the person sitting next to us, our fellow diners/drinkers at the pub with us after the show. It was so cheesy and cute. I get teary thinking about it still. : )
Our pictures arent the greatest quality since they’re just screen captures from a phone video, but they’re perfect to me and maybe we can get them sharpened a bit down the road. My ring is a pale sky blue montana sapphire which is the most perfect stone in the world to me. Ive always wanted a Montana Sapphire because of how gorgeously unique the colors are, almost like pastels, and how much I love hiking Montana.
