He’s really positive and keeps telling me not to worry about it, but I can’t help it, I always overanalyze everything. He went to the dentist a couple of weeks ago to have one of his back teeth looked at because it’s been bothering him a lot. It was cracked from when he had one of his wisdom teeth taken out, but he never did anything about it. They put him on antibiotics because it was infected, but they were planning to cap it now that the infection is gone.
So he went back to get it capped and the dentist wouldn’t do anything to it because he found a growth on the gum behind it. So he ended up cutting out most of the growth but not all of it because it’s really deep and he was worried about damaging the hypoglossal nerve. That’s the nerve that leads to the tongue and could affect his speech and taste if they damage it trying to get the rest of the growth out.
He has no idea what the growth is, we’re waiting for the tests to come back on it. The first thing that popped in my head was what if it’s cancer. I know there’s a lot of other things it could be, but I can’t stop imagining that it’s something terrible. And I’m pissed off that the dentist didn’t thoroughly look at him when he was there the first time and notice it then.
He keeps telling me to go to bed and stop thinking about it, but I’m such a worrier.

(((hugs))) I’m so sorry, what a stressful thing to have to deal with. Sending positive vibes your way until you get the results.

There is a chance the growth came up as an issue because of the wisdom tooth extraction…..so maybe it’s that!…it could be from the infection as well….
I wouldn’t worry too much until test results come back…..

@HeatherMM: I’d be worried if you weren’t worried about your Fiance.
Not all growths are cancer. I will preface this by saying that I realize that this example is not exactly comparable. But one of our dogs had a gingival mass removed about 2 months ago. When I saw it, I worried about cancer as well. But it turned out to be a benign growth. Until the pathology comes back, you won’t know anything for sure. Once the doctor knows what the growth is, then they will be able to come up with a treatment plan.
Hang in there!

If it makes you feel better the most common sites for oral cancer are on the tongue and the floor of the mouth. Oral cancer is also a rare cancer, so if your fiance doesn’t smoke or chew and drink a lot then he’s probably okay.

@bells219: Thank you
@smcs28: I was thinking that after my initial reaction about it possibly being cancer. I’m really hoping it’s just something that stemmed from the infection.
@StarryNight2011: I’m trying to just be patient while waiting for the results, and hope it’s a benign growth. I always worry like crazy though. Even when I’m not thinking about it being cancer, I’m thinking what if they damage that nerve and then he can’t taste or has no feeling in his tongue.

@BrynnM: That does make me feel a little better. He doesn’t smoke, never has. He used to drink a lot though.

@HeatherMM: Of course youre worried and he probably is as well, despite the brave face. Big hugs and positive thoughts your way that it’s benign and they can get it out with no problem. Just keep positive and know that not all growths are cancerous.

Yikes!! This is scary! Idk what it is, but teeth problems upset me more than anything else. I have weekly dreams about losing teeth, etc.
Hopefully it all goes well!
