hello fellow bees,
i’m having some concerns and need some advice. i live at home with my parents and my brother and this past week my parents took a cruise vacation. while they were gone, my brother and i tried our best to keep up our normal routine for our two cats. one of my cats doesn’t care where he goes or what he does as long as he is fed. on the other hand, my younger cat is much more emotional. ever since we’ve had him, he is always more afraid of unknown people, he is scared of sudden movements/noises, he just doesn’t like anything he doesn’t know. we figured he would be okay since the two of us were with him. and he was up until the morning of the day my parents were coming home. both of my cats were acting strage and we figured they sensed my parent’s return. big cat was fine, ate, and slept all day as usual. my little one didn’t eat his regular breakfast that morning and was super jumpy when my parents got home. he kept away from all of us as we caught up on the past week and hasn’t eaten since. i tried enticing him with a couple of his treats and he went crazy for them as he always does.
is this him having stress due to my parents leaving and then coming back? i’m so worried for him and wondered if anyone has any advice. thanks so much!

@omglauren: Sounds like stress to me because he’s still eating his treats. If my cat won’t eat his food, I try his treats which he also goes NUTSO for, and if he’s not eating those a vet trip is in his immediate future.
How long have your parents been home? They may smell funny from the trip which also bugs cats 🙂

You’re probably right about stress. Things weren’t “right” within the house and he was all sorts of worried. One of my old cats was a stray before we took him in. He was all kinds of a mess. When we’d go away for a few days and come back he’d be mad at us. Wouldn’t want to come greet us, wouldn’t want anything to do with us until he got over it. He would eventually come back out of hiding and start being his normal, albeit skittish, self within a few hours.

Probably stress. Sounds like my girl kitty. He’ll be fine.

Sounds like our cat! She gets stressed over the littlest things. Once, we had moved around furniture and she couldn’t locate her “scratcher” (which is actually not a scratcher but a wicker plant stand – whatev.). It took her a few days to find the scratcher, in which time I had contemplated taking her to her vet because she was acting strange. Sure enough, as soon as I pointed out the scratcher she was fine.
They do make chewable, herbal supplements for cats called “Composure” that help them deal with stress & anxiety. We give them to our baby if we have company coming over or an upcoming change to routine to help her cope. Just a thought for the future! They are over the counter, sold at our vet office and about $9 for 30 chews.

Thanks everyone! He still isn’t eating his regular food but I fed him a little tuna mixed with his normal wet food and he ate it up. I’m wondering if he is just getting picky about what he eats. I bought him a different brand of wet and dry food and he ate some just now. If he isn’t back to normal by Thursday, off to the vet we go.
@MrsD41503: thanks for the recommendation of the chewables for the cats. I’m looking into them now and maybe that’ll help my sweet baby boy from being so nervous. 🙂

I used to joke that my cat would get mad at me when I would go on vacation. She was a feral kitten so she’s always had the fearful behavior going on. Anyway, when I was living with my parents, she knew the sound of my door opening and would always come running to be in my room with me. She also comes when I call her. After we would get back from vacation she would ignore me for about a week. Wouldn’t come to the sound of my door or when I would call. I wouldn’t really see her for the week. Then she would warm back up and everything would be back to normal. Cats are weird and will react differently to changes, especially if they are more sensitive to begin with. I wouldn’t worry.

okay final update y’all! We took him to the vet the other night and the doctor could not find anything wrong. they wanted us to run blood tests and check for all kinds of things but sadly it was too expensive. so our next best option was to just give him an injection of antibiotics and if there was an infection manifesting, it would take care of it.
so back home from the vet…. He is back to eating and his normal self. Crazy cat! He knew what he was doing all along. He must’ve been mad at my parents! 🙂 thanks everyone for your responses, they were very comforting!
