I went almost a year ago, in November. I didn’t notice a problem with the mosquitos but I know our rooms had mosquito netting attached to the beds, just in case.

we had a bigger concern with the water, and so I’d recommend ALWAYS ask for bottled water and never have “slushy” drinks from the pool bar (those ones never get cleaned). Needless to say, most of us got sick for a good half of our trip!! 🙁

june1716:  we went to Jamaica earlier this year when the virus was a major concern. I would check what the resort you are planning to stay at does – ours sprayed everything daily and kept a stock of specific types of repellent that work to prevent it. We used OFF, never saw any mosquitoes and had a great time. Neither of us got sick.

june1716:  I went this past May.  I really think Chikungunya, “dont drink the water”, rape, robbery, murder, corruption of law enforcement, etc. is amplified by the internet.  We had a great time, although the reviews had me scared to death initially. I was more worried about getting raped & murdered than catching any foreign diseases.

Just exercise precaution in everything.  Use common sense.  Wear mosquito repellent, don’t be out walking around in an isolated area after dark, don’t get drunk and pass out on the beach/in a bar…etc. Now really, don’t drink the water, but it’s safe to shower and brush teeth.  Everybody was adamant about not brushing teeth with the water, but I did and I was fine.  It’s basically like anywhere else you’d go.  People are super friendly and most are helpful to tourists.  They don’t want to hurt outsiders because that’s what builds their economy!

We went to Plaza Bavaro looking for an extra suitcase (aka in the ghetto lol) and it got dark whIle we were there.  The shopkeeper had one of his men walk my pregnant friend & I back to the gate of our resort to make sure we got back okay.  I’m sure there are some bad people around (just like everywhere else) but most will tell you if you’re putting yourself in danger.  I say this because I asked several about indigenous disease and they all said it’s not a problem.  It’s no more of a problem there than it is in Florida.  I mean it can happen, but it’s not likely.

I highly recommend a plantation tour! We loved it! You got to see where they grow/process coffee, vanilla, cocoa, tobacco, coconut oil, etc.  AND got to sample haha…they even gave us cigars to sample! I drank coffee made in a little hut, rubbed coconut oil on me in the middle of the jungle, drank cocoa tea, mamajuana  (it really is an aphrodisiac! Lol), sucked on a cocoa bean seed…all while standing in the middle of a hot (mosquito infested im sure) forest, and I lived! So I think you’ll be fine!

Edited: sorry I thought you said you had decided on it.  if you do go, you’ll love it! It was soooo fun and I can’t wait to go back! It was my favorite vacation in the Caribbean by far! We stayed at the Grand Palladium (3 resorts in one) and I definitely recommend it.

june1716:  It seems like everyone I know goes to Punta Cana  so I’ve heard interesting stories. Nothing about catching a virus or even a mosquito problem, but DH’s cousins went on their honeymoon and spent the whole first half sick because they used the water to brew coffee. They did not come back raving about that vacation haha.

june1716:  It applies to the resorts as well.
