So I am a newbie to this whole wedding business, been engaged for about 10 months now, and I am so excited to start planning a life with my best friend! However, I am scared and nervous that I may be jumping the gun, or planning too soon. We are not getting married for another two years, but I feel like it would be best to begin looking at dresses, venues, etc before my fiance and I get busy again with school, jobs, and whatnot. My mom has no money to pay for my wedding and my dad has to ply for his cancer treatments for he cant help, so I’m paying for my wedding all by myself. Just need some words from the more informed as my fiance and I begin a new, exciting begining in our lives together. Thanks!

Is the wedding in 2013 or 2014? Because if it is more than 2 years away you might want to pace yourself a bit. It is good to start planning early, but you dont want to make financial commitments to a dress or a venue too far ahead in case to find sometime better that you love, or just change your mind totally

@Crann0217: Not sure how it works in your area but in my area most places won’t even schedule anything that is more than a year away. So things like catering, venue, etc. can be looked at but for my area we can’t even set anything in stone.
We aren’t getting married till 2013 so I’m not going to start looking at anything for at least 18 months. Unless I find an amazing deal or contest to enter. And I’ll be able to save more beforehand too.
Up to you what you choose to do. But you do have some time to think about things and take a look at your options.
Also, if you are having a wedding that is themed or involves any colors that are used in any specific holidays or seasons look right before/after those seasons are over for amazing deals on decor, gifts, dinnerware, etc. You can find stuff for pennies on the dollar and save it for the following year or two when you have your wedding. Set aside a closet or room to stock up on things you can use.
Congrats and good luck on the deals.

@bells: 2014. But i want to make it perfect. I have had a rough life growing up so i want to make this a huge turn around in my life. I’m using my mother’s wedding dress (getting if fitted and altered to me). I’ve never been to a wedding or even talked to anyone about planning a wedding so i have no idea how or when to do anything.

i don’t think theres anything wrong with looking around and seeing what you want right now but like they said i wouldn’t buy anything quite yet because you never know if you change your mind, find a better deal etc. I personally know how it is to get excited and not want to wait to start the planning =)
