Kinda new to Wedding Bee, so I’m sorry if this is not the place to ask about this. I’m just wondering if someone could explain to me exactly what silk flowers are? Tried looking online but every site seems to contradict. So if anyone has any experience and/or knowledge with them, what care is required for them? And would y’all recommend them over real flowers if on a tight budget? How far in advance can you make the bouquets/centerpieces if using silk? Thank you!

I don’t know much about silk flowers, but I’m using origami in place of fresh flowers because of my and one of my flowers girls’ allergies. When I was looking into silk, to get them to actually look like flowers and not cheap, you end up spending about the same amount as you would on flowers, whereas other options don’t look like they’re pretending to be flowers, but they’re something else in their own right. I’ll PM you a link to my blog if you like, because I wrote a post about some of the alternatives to fresh flowers when I was researching it.

Silk flowers are fake flowers, silk is probably a misnomer as most are probably not made of silk. There are lots of people that prefer real flowers over fake, and vice versa. Craft stores like hobby lobby, Joann fabrics, and michaels have silk flowers. I disagree that silk flowers cost more. If you have any of these stores in your area, they all have coupons and sales every week so you can pick them up when they go on sale or gather them stem by stem with the coupons (usually 40 or 50% off). Many of these stores carry ” real touch” flowers, which are made to look more ‘real’ with different coatings, etc on the flower. For example, I got several stems of real touch orchids at Michaels at a buy one, get one free sale. They were regularly 5.99 per stem, with 7 flowers per stem, so I got enough to make my bouquet, 4 corsages, and 6 boutonnierres for $20 or $30.
I am doing a cruise wedding, and they will not allow me to bring real flowers onto the cruise ship, so I have to do fake 🙂 the great thing is that you can do your flowers well in advance.
