- Wedding: April 2010
Hi fellow Nutmeggers
I got married on April 10th and thought I would share some vendor reviews for others planning in the area – feel free to contact me with any questions!
My Dress (Casablanca) and Bridesmaid dresses (Alfred Angelo):
Stylish Impressions in Farmington
Very nice staff, a bit flaky at times but good. The seamstress was great (not on site but only a couple minutes away and she comes to the shop). They sell dresses off the rack at a discount so I bought mine this way – it was a nice option to have and the dress worked out beautifully. They have a pretty good selection of wedding gowns and a pretty broad selection of bridesmaid dresses/mother of the bride&groom etc… My mom got her dress here too and it was beautiful.
Flowers: Heather Henry (HGK Designs)
I found Heather online and I am so happy I did. We were on a pretty tight budget and she was great. She was really responsive and helpful and her work was gorgeous – I was so happy with the flowers from the corsages for the mom’s to the bouquets to the centerpieces – everything was beautiful. She had to juggle the flowers carefully because of the heat the week leading up to the wedding but everything turned out beautifully.
DJ: Jason Palermo
Jason was great – very responsive, very friendly and conscientious. He did his best to read the crowd and keep people dancing. He was very flexible and very easy going. And definitely the most affordable DJ I was in touch with. I didn’t want a light show, fog, gimmicks or props – just good music and he delivered.
Photographer: HK Photography
Hubert and his partner Alka were great – they had very different approaches but it worked for us. They were very available and friendly and Hubert was very responsive in the days leading up to the wedding. We haven’t seen the photos from our day yet but our experience on the wedding day was very positive. I think we forgot to get a picture of the whole bridal party so that will be a bummer if that’s the case but otherwise I think we managed to get the pictures we wanted. I can’t wait to see them!
Church – the church where I grew up in West Hartford – I don’t really consider it a ‘vendor’ – there was no comparison or shopping around!
Catering – Michael’s Catering from New Britain, CT
John is wonderful – he took the time to meet with us in December and again the week of the wedding. He catered my sister’s wedding 10 years ago and people were still talking about the food. I was very happy with the food on our wedding day and I think lots of people were too. I actually ate which I hear is fairly uncommon!
Reception – the Irish American Home Society in Glastonbury
We are longtime members and my parents’ and sister’s receptions were both held there. I was not very excited about the venue because of the surroundings (industrial park/commercial buildings) but the inside was great and I couldn’t fault it. That being said I am a pretty easy going person and was happy to have enough seats and tables for everyone – the fact that the room was pretty was a bonus…
Cake – Mozzicato di Pasquale – Hartford, CT
Delish – we didn’t get to have much of it but I thought it was yummy AND pretty. Again, it wasn’t a big deal to me so the fact that it looked nice and was tasty worked for me! Three tiers, three flavors – I would like to find out someday if our guests ate any…
Programs – printed at Kinko’s – faboo and FAST. thank goodness…
Day of Coordinator – my friend is a planner in Rhode Island and she was a LIFE SAVER. If you need any event planning/wedding planning/ day of coordinating you will be grateful if you can hire her: Stephanie at Couture Parties – amazing. Simply wonderful.
Shoes – Rainbow Club shoes – a UK brand of bridal shoe. My only regret is that I didn’t buy those cozy foot things that go inside them – otherwise lovely.
Registry – we have registries at Crate and Barrel and Bed, Bath and Beyond – no complaints and I really like a lot of the things we’ve been given from them.
Hair and Makeup (and nails) – the Hair Color Company on Farmington Avenue in West Hartford – very happy with them. I was very happy with my hair and make up and I loved the way my friends/bridesmaids looked. We were able to get into the salon at 8 am and we were all done by about 11 am. They’re not cheap but not the worst in the Center either. They let us bring in champagne, juice and snacks so it was a nice way to start the day.
Hotel: We had a lot of out of town guests so we block booked into the Homewood Suites in Farmington – lovely hotel, helpful staff, nice rooms – our guests were happy with the location and the hotel and my husband (!) and I stayed there the night of the wedding and the night after too. I would recommend it to anyone with similar needs. They are supposed to have a shuttle service but it wasn’t consistent so they covered taxis for our guests to get wherever they wanted to go. A little chaotic but it all worked out!
I think that’s everything – if anyone wants more info let me know!
