My fiance and i are in the beginning stages of planning our wedding. We’re pretty firm on not wanting a traditional catering hall type wedding which makes this process challenging… to find places, figure out logistics, etc.
Does anyone have thoughts / advice on working with a wedding planner? Is it worth it? Are there affordable planners out there in the NY / Long Island area?

@Linzer: This all depends on what you want for your big day. I am a professional planner and I do think it would be beneficial for you to hire one if you know you will need help. I know a lot of people will say ask a friend to help or family member but there is more to it than just an extra pair of hands. A professional planner will have relationships built with the local venues and other wedding professionals which they will be able to guide you through your choices. They will also know what professionals to go to and which ones will not be good because of their history and reputation within the industry. They can steer you clear of any potential issues and keep you on track with your budget and time.
The biggest advice I can give you is interview serveral planners before making your choice and don’t hire on price. Hire on who you like and who you click with so to speak. You will be speanding a lot of time with this person and they will be helping you plan one of the most important days of your life so you want someone who you really get a long with and who knows their stuff.
The number one thing I have learned is that if it really sticks with you that you want and need a coordinator you will be willing to come up with the money you need to hire the one you want. Whether that means putting together a custom package to fit within your budget and still get the planner you love or maybe taking on a few of the tasks on your own with their guidence via a consultation.
Good luck with your search and happy planning!
