A senbazuru is 1,000 folded origami cranes. It is given as a wedding gift or as a gift to someone who is ill as a sign of good health and prosperity. Giving them to a new baby for a lifetime of health, good luck, and happiness is also very common. Creating all of the cranes is also considered a bit of a spiritual journey.
This is the one I made for my wedding. We were married at The Views at Mt. Fuji. http://theviewsatmtfuji.com/ So my question is, should I make one to gift to the baby? Our nursery theme is going to be Winnie the Pooh, especially Eeyore, but I thought I could make it in the colors of the blankets, curtains, etc so that although it is not the same “theme” it would still match colorwise.
What do you all think?

I think it would be super cool, but I also wouldn’t do it if it will stress you out about not getting it done. That is a LOT of cranes. But it looks amazing!

I LOVE this idea! I love the sentiment behind it, I love the way it looks – everything! I think this is a really touching, personal gift.
My question is, if you’re going to go through all this hard work, is there any way to preserve it? Could the cranes be put in some kind of shadow box or something?
Maybe you could break them up a bit, and have some displayed as a mobile above the crib or something? I kind of like that idea, personally.

For reference, that one took me about 3 weeks (with about 200 of them made by my husband). I have about 3 months if I decide to make this one.

@yellowismyfavoritecolor: Yes, I could definitely split it up like the wedding one and put it in a shadow box (rather than the traditional circle tying (think really long pinata looking)). And I could make a mini one for a mobile or use 1 or two of the strings to make it. There is no real way you HAVE to tie it, so lots of flexibility there 🙂 Great ideas, thanks!
