Titanium may be a good choice. Hard to bend even if hit with a hammer.

anewvogue :  Check out Qualo rings (silicone).  I’d be wary of any hard metals that would be difficult to cut off in a medical emergency (like tungsten).  The alternative is have whatever metal one he wants that he can wear outside of work, and wear the silicone at work – they’re inexpensive and come in a bunch of different colors.\

ETA – I know there are wooden rings, but I don’t imagine those hold up very well for very long.

My husband works in construction as well, and he just doesn’t wear his ring to work. 🙂

anewvogue :  i would just have him skip it at work. Not worth the risk IMO. My husband doesn’t wear his to work.

Petals2002 :  That actually makes the ring a worse choice for construction. If the ring gets caught in something it won’t break, but the finger will. You can loose a finger like that. It’s safer to wear something like silicone which will snap under pressure.

anewvogue :  Silicone is probably safest while on the job, but he could have a “fancy” ring for when he’s lounging or out on dates with you. Tungsten won’t be safe at work because it could still break a finger, but it should be safe if it needs to be cut off. Tungsten shatters under pressure, so it’s easy to break the ring if you need to in a medical emergency. Unfortunately that means that it’s not resizable.
I’d probably go with silicone (or no ring) for work and a “normal” metal like silver, gold, platinum, palladium for dates. Given your fiance’s active lifestyle, it is possible he could injure his hand (or age) in such a way that his ring size changes (I sprained a pinky and my joint is permanently larger than it was before). You would probably want a “fancy” ring that you can resize
