So after scrapping our backyard wedding idea, the FI’s job offers a great rate (he works at a hotel that also does weddings). However, the bar is a consumption bar with wine @ 18 per bottle. Should we ask if we can bring in our own wine? or maybe ask for a flat rate? I know some people wont drink but others might go overboard. any suggestions?

They’ll likely have a corkage fee if they permit you to bring in your own wine. Ask what the flat rate is – you may be able to negotiate it.

I agree @kay01 about a corkage fee for bringing your own wine. Is there a way where you can put a dollar limit or you want open bar the entire time?

I think our place initially charged $45 for 4 hours. We got them to do $19 for 5 hrs with beer/hard alcohol, and wine is an additional $22 per bottle. It’s odd because we used another place we were considering to negotiate that had an odd pricing which they then changed shortly thereafter. Taxes, fees add another 30%. We’re capping the wine at 35 or 50 bottles I think, which ought to carry us through cocktail hour and dinner. If it doesn’t, well…we’ll likely open a few more. In VT, you can’t bring in outside liquor at all, it’s against state law. At $45, we would have paid per drink instead of per hour.
So, check with your vendor on laws and venue regulations. If you can bring in outside drink, awesome, but don’t bank on it. Try to negotiate, cap the hours to 1 less than you have the space or cap the money to a set limit, see if you can get upgraded on something (e.g. better beer), ask if you do beer/wine/signature drink if it’ll be cheaper…

$18 for a bottle of wine at a restaurant is pretty much as low as you’d find I think. If they serve liquor there, you probably can’t bring in your own or else it would be an issue with their liquor license. I would definitely try to cap the cost at a certain amount or limit things to wine, beer and one signature drink. For all of the people that will drink more than the average person, there will be many who choose to have 0 or 1 drink.
