So I had my 3 hour glucose test on Tuesday (posted about it earlier this week). Normally I try to be really relaxed about this stuff and not bother my doctor unless truly necessary so they can deal with more important things. However, I’ve just been REALLY desperate to find out the results. The phlebotomist told me I should call Thursday if I want the results, because they should be in by then. So, I called yesterday. My test results were in, but they weren’t “signed off” on yet. I don’t really know what that means…like no one’s looked at them? Or I failed and she wanted the nurse to tell me instead of her?
Anyways, she said she couldn’t share the results but she could let the nurse know that I’d like a call with the test results. I gave my info…and nobody’s called me yet. I called at 9am yesterday, so it’s only been a little more than 24 hours…but it’s just bugging me. Would I be obnoxious if I called again today to follow up? Am I unreasonable in wanting the results since I know they already have them? I just was hoping to find out before the weekend if I failed, and they close at noon on Fridays.

As a nurse, usually if there is a problem, they are more likely to call you than if everything is OK. Usually the physician signs off before the nurse calls with results (like a nurse can’t see if something is abnormal but whatever). As you know, offices can be busy. Unless you have a hx of gestational diabetes or other pre-disposing factors, I would try not to worry. If it was an abnormal test they would most assuredly get it to the doc and call you ASAP. In medicine no news is usually good news!

eandh0904 : Yea the thing that’s bugging me about that…my OB’s office said “no news is good news, we’ll only call if something’s abnormal”. So I was fine with that and everything had been normal…up until I failed my 1 hour glucose test. They told me test results would be in within 2 days, but if they were normal they wouldn’t call and would just tell me at my next appointment. Two days passed, and I was like, woohoo! In the clear! Then a week and a half later I get a call saying I need to come in as soon as possible because I failed…which meant unexpectedly cancelling a full morning of meetings to go in for the 3 hour test. So, I guess I kind of stopped trusting the no news is good news thing?

I would call again, because if you don’t get an answer today you’ll be preoccupied all weekend!

I would call again. Especially if they say they would have results by now.

When I worked in pathology I could look up results, but was not allowed to give anything out at all, I could just say whether we had the results or not yet, and no-one can give them out unless somebody qualified has authorised the result on the system. So I’d say they have run the tests and they’re just waiting on someone to tick a box to say they can give the result out. If you called yesterday I’d say you’re fine to try again today.

Nope, call again. They should be calling you either way since you’ve already called again. Once per day is pretty reasonable.

Ok, I called. Urghh…still no sign off. They said the same thing as yesterday basically, they’d send a note to one of the nurses right away and have them call me right back. I’m almost certain I won’t be getting an answer until next week now 🙁

lula0508 : My OB’s office is the same. The nurse cannot provide me with the results until the dr has signed off on it. Typically if the dr hasn’t signed off on it that means he/she hasn’t reviwewed the results yet. Since you’ve called twice inquiring I hope they place it on your OB’s desk and get a timely response.

Don’t feel bad about calling. Doctors offices can get very busy and they could have forgot or the nurse forgot to give it to the doctor. I’m sorry you have to wait until Monday. Hopefully they will call you after they close today and have some time to catch up. Good luck.

Finally got it! Whew, guess I was being too pessimistic about not getting the results today. Also I felt like an idiot because it turns out the nurse had left me a message yesterday afternoon, but my phone has glitchy service (thanks t-mobile) so sometimes I don’t get messages until later if my phone’s been sitting somewhere without a signal. The message literally popped into my inbox about 1 minute after she called.
The good news, I passed well below the cut off for all of the blood draws!! Warning to anyone doing the 1 hour–just because they don’t tell you to fast, doesn’t mean it’s ok to start the test within an hour of eating a full-sized lunch…I’m convinced that contributed to my 1 hr failing.
