I think you should investigate your career options before you apply to school. Maybe get in touch with your local hospital and see if you can speak to someone in the sonography group? I think it’s a great idea to go back to school, but having some insight from someone working in the field might put your mind at ease about choosing a program! Good luck, I’m thinking about heading back myself!

I think that anything that will further your future prospects is a good thing. Your education should be important, so I say go for it. If that’s really what you want to do, then do it.

@XxMyXxDecemberXx: Well if it’s something that you’re passionate about, then go for it! More school is never a bad thing, and it will give you direction and a goal, instead of feeling like you’re floundering looking for a job. I felt like that until I signed up to do a certificate program.

EDIT: I’m an out of work engineer – don’t feel too down about not being able to find a job right away – in this economy I think it’s totally about where you live and what your competition is for jobs, it’s different everywhere.

Go for it! More education is never a bad thing. I would definitely research that particular field a little more- try seeing if you can job shadow a sonographer at a local hospital near you.

Good luck!

@XxMyXxDecemberXx: Good luck with going back to school! My only other advice is make sure you know what the application deadlines are. Lots of programs have deadlines in February for the following September, there is nothing worse than running around at the last minute.

I work at a ultrasound clinic and started on my nursing degree in the hope of completeing a diploma in medical imaging – ultrasonography. I think it would be an amazing job. However, now I am going to be working as a nurse for a while first but I still hope to eventually go back to my original plan. The study plans maybe different here in Australia to what it is where you are. Here it is a 2 year course after you have graduated and have ‘experience’ in a undergraduate degree in a health science. They prefer you do radiography first but not always necessary as they need more workers.

I’ve never been in the degree field that you’re considering pursuing, but I say if you want to go back to school, go for it!

I’ve been looking for work for over a year now, looking at everything from retail to fast food to something in my field, so I know what it’s like to feel that your degree is worthless. I have a B.A. in English. I also live in an area with one of the worst economies in the United States. I’ve often considered going back for my Masters degree, just to have something going for me.

I hope you figure out what will work for you. Good luck with both the job front and going back to school.
