Here’s the article about the data plan.

Maybe this change already happened?! I never look at my bill because I have it set up for automatic withdrawal. But I do definitely download a lot of data.

@gabrielleelise1981: basically yes. It means that you “unlock” the phone so that you can install alternative software and then you could have verizon service.

However, if you’re on Verizon already, you might consider a droid (sorry, I know this is the we love iphone thread!)

I skimmed through a lot of the responses, and just wanted to give you a heads up that the iPhone is supposed to come to Verizon in early 2011.. I refuse to go back to AT&T (I had bad experiences, not to say that a lot of people don’t), and I’ve been so jealous of my iPhone toting friends. I’m hoping that once it does, eventually, come to Verizon that I can upgrade!

@mrbee: my reception went south when i got the iphone 4 too…very annoying

@noodlesploosh: those changes went into effect in july when the 4 came out. if you already had an unlimited plan then you don’t have to switch, it only affects new customers. and i’m surprised (skeptical?) to hear anyone had good service in the underground sections of the NY subway….unlike DC which sold a contract to verizon to install cells in their metro system, NY has chosen so far to basically block cell reception underground.

@ a lot of people: i’ve had at&t (and cingular before they merged) for the 10 years i have lived in new york, and don’t think they are any better or worse than any other phone company here. Fiance has verizon (with a droid) and there’s plenty of times i have service and he doesn’t, and then there’s plenty of times when he has service and i don’t. same goes with friends who have tmobile and sprint.

and to the OP: i have been an obsessed iphone user since the first gen phone came out (i now have a 4) and i can’t imagine ever not having one at this point, but paying $650 for one would be a bit much even for me. can you snatch up the friend’s phone now and then have your huband wait until the contract is up to switch over?

Re: reception– I really do think it is where you live. I live in Columbus Ohio and I almost never drop calls. We had a layover at JFK last week though and I had NO server. argh.

I have a 3Gs and it’s been REALLY glitchy since the big update for iPhone 4. However, with the recent update it’s been a tad better.
You are able to revert your software prior to the big update if it’s really bothering you.

I’m waiting for the white iPhone 4 to come out! ๐Ÿ™‚

All iPhones have SIM cards that only accept AT&T as their carrier. Unlocked iPhones are those where the software has been changed to accept other carriers. Note this will void your warranty because technically it’s illegal.

Your best bet for a unlocked iPhone is probably eBay.

@Gerbera: I think in Canada and pretty much all other countries, the iPhone can be used on multiple carriers (correct me if i’m wrong, Bees!). So, she won’t have the issues we have in the US with carrier exclusivity.

I loved my iPhone until the 4g came out and my signal has taken a major dive. I can easily go from 5 bars to 1 to 3 to 1 all in 5 minutes and sitting in the same spot. I luckily had the unlimited plan in place before the changes took place. Otherwise I wouldn’t have been able to keep it. I use millions of kb every month.

iPhone 4 is pretty much the best thing EVER! My husband has the 4, my awesome brother gave that to us as part of our wedding gift. But I’m opting to be patient and wait for the white one. hehe.
LOVE FaceTime on the iPhone 4. It’s so great to be able to see family with the ease of a phone call.

Not worth $650. It is a phone after all! It is worth the markdown price for new contract though. But seriously, question why you would even consider spending so much on a phone (the $650). Is it more to be seen with it or do you actually need it that badly? I have the iPhone 4, had the iPhone since the 3g, I do love it and am attached to it, but… wait until you can get it for the discounted price.
