- Wedding: September 2011
I will give both the long and short of it:
Short version: Okay so my question basically boils down to, did other bees have written contracts with their priests/churches?
Long version: I am not church-going but I am religious. I was raised Roman Catholic and received all of my sacraments up to marriage. I always felt that being Roman Catholic was very restricting or binding. Recently I read about the Episcopal church and felt like it was the less restrictive environment I was looking for. I don’t have a church that I really belong to. My mother’s church is Roman Catholic and I don’t want to go through all the pomp and circumstance of that sort of wedding.
My problem is the particular Episcopal church I have been contacting seems very disorganized. This church only has a visiting priest (they do not have their own to run the parish), who is only at the church 1 day per week. It is also against their rules to contact him directly. So I repeatedly tried to contact their warden and it took weeks for him to get back to me. When I finally was given permission to call the priest, it also took multiple messages and weeks for him to get back to me. He then told me he had a conference to attend the day of my wedding and would find a priest to stand in for himself. Cut to me a month later with no reply from him. I called and left another message and a week later the warden calls me and says they really want me to have my wedding at their church and they think they may have found a priest who can run the ceremony. But there is still no definite answer and the situation feels precarious at best. I am now 4 months overdue to book my ceremony site and very frustrated. They say they want me to hold my wedding at their church, I very much want my wedding at their church but it seems like communication is very spotty.
I am worried that I should have a contract that makes it clear what the priest and church expect and what I expect. I have contracts with everyone else, the florist, the reception hall, the catering service, the baker….but somehow it seems almost sacrilegious or blasphemous to ask that of a priest/church.
I hope there is another bee that can help me.
