middle of the wall.  we have an assymetrically located fireplace, (albeit not a corner one) and it’s a pain in the butt.

@cherrycoke:  Cherry Coke zero is just as yummy with out the calories. As for your question our fireplace is currently a corner and we love it but I definitely think it depends on the set up your going for and where doors and windows are.

Ours is in the middle & I like it alot better that way. It saves room!

You can see ours here to the left of the photo:

@Sweet.Sugar.Rose:  Your house looks so inviting! πŸ™‚

I really want to sit on your couch with a cup of coffee and turn on the fireplace!

It really depends on placement of the windows and if the room is open to the kitchen or hall, etc. In alot of cases if the fireplace is in the middle of the wall you look to lose that whole wall & if the other large wall is full of windows that can present a problem…. especially for trying to find a place for your TV &/or entertainment system.

After living with the fireplace in the middle of the wall I’m pretty much set on never having that like that again.

ETA: Here’s a quick layout of how our house was…. we were literally stuck with putting our TV in the corner & considering you spend more time with that as a room focal point as opposed to a fireplace (used only in the cold months) we ran into more issues with putting furniture where you could still see the TV as opposed to the the fireplace.

With the Fireplace in the corner you don’t have to have the couches facing the fireplace to still be able to enjoy it….

I would definitely prefer the middle of the wall.  I’ve seen houses where it was in the corner and have always had trouble figuring out the best way to place furniture because if you face the couch to the fireplace it is at a weird angle compared to the rest of the room and if you face it a different direction the fireplace ends up not being a focal point anymore.  I also agree that a corner fireplace makes a room seem smaller because you are limited in how you can arrange the furniture.  I have always been a big fan of a fireplace in the middle of the back wall with windows on either side (if possible) and a flat screen tv mounted to the wall above the fireplace πŸ™‚

In your sketch is there any way to put the fireplace on the adjacent wall?  The one across from the kitchen and dining?  It seems like you would be able to use the long space better that way.

In NZ a lot of fireplaces have an exposed flu because that is where the majority of the heat comes from. I had the same dilemma when designing our own house plans! In the end I decided middle of the wall because more of the house would have exposure to the flu – aka the heat source and would be more efficient. If it’s in a corner then almost 3/4 of the heat goes to the outside walls and not your house! I hope that makes sense πŸ˜€

DH’s childhood home had a corner fireplace. It was really pretty, but cut the room into a weird L shape that made it hard to furnish and wasted A LOT of space. I grew up with a middle of the wall fireplace and it was really nice.
