So, I’ve finally chosen a dress: http://www.sotteroandmidgley.com/dress.aspx?showAll=1&style=VSM7047 and will be ordering it online shortly. I’m not sure which size to order as I’m a street size 10 with generous hips and a very small upper body. Luckily the dress has a corset back so that it can be tightened, but I’m worried about the hip/butt area. The corset goes to right about the top of the bum crack (sorry), so it can be tightened there too, but I’m not sure if I should get a size bigger – a size 12. I’ve tried on this dress in a UK 10, which is about a US 8, and it was too tight and bunching. I’m just not sure if I buy a size larger (12), if I’ll be able to tighten it up the corset to make it fit. I’d really like to get away without getting the dress altered. For those of you who bought a dress with a corset back, what was your experience like when it came to the dress fitting your hips/butt?

Hey, Katika, with my Sottero and Midgley, I find that there’s actually not too much flexibility in the hip area (I have the opposite problem from yours: no hips to speak of), but plenty of flexibility up top. You can sort of see from the photo of your gown that the corset lacing at the bottom couldn’t get much tighter and the dress might get misshapen if it opened up much more.
So, my recommendation would be to get the size that fits your hip measurement and you’ll likely be able to cinch the top down fit properly.

My Demetrios dress was ordered about 4 sizes bigger than my street clothes. I believe all wedding dresses are smaller than street sizes. I have a corset back too and I found it was very flexable and my sister was able to close it up with out me passing out. I would measure yourself and check their size chart so you do not order a dress that is too small. Order it in your size so just incase you get smaller or larger it wont be a problem. Hope that helps!

My dress was Alfred Angelo – the sizing was really close to my street size (in fact matched my pants size exactly. I usually have to go up a size for dresses or they are too tight in the bust, but the corset takes care of that!!) You have a lot of control over sizing through the waist and bust with a corset back, but really none through the hips. As you already pointed out, the corset lacing is designed to have the sides fairly close together down there anyway. If you pull them much farther apart, the fabric isn’t going to lay right in the back at the top of the skirt. I would order to fit your hips as closely as possible – you may be able to have the hips let out a little if they are too small, but I think the corset will give you more control over sizing at the top, and very little at the bottom.

i ordered a maggie dress and I ordered my street size because I am smaller then the smallest size they have, so I would need some alterations when I get my dress in, I wanted to got one up but was not recommended to do so.
that dress is so pretty!

Thanks a lot for the suggestions. I measured myself (once again) around my hips and decided to get the size based on that measurement. I ordered it this morning and looking forward to getting it EEEEE!!!!!!
