@luvmesumhim:  I would call around to different jewelers to see what they charge for setting a stone (whether it is diamond or not) and do some comparison shopping. I know my Fiance got my diamond from Blue Nile and we went to an independent jeweler to get the stone set and they didn’t charge us anything for it since we bought a setting from them. Couldn’t you also have it already set from the website/store you are buying the moissanite from? All the moissy sites I have seen, they sell the setting too usually for one price as a set.

It should be similar to setting a diamond cost.

I had a diamond set recently in platinum and it cost $40 as it was a small family run store. But I know that is on the low end. Most jewellers I have talked to charged $80 ish.

@luvmesumhim:  palladium is like platinum – high melting point and harder to work with than white gold.

WG is defnitely going to be cheaper.

Mine is a simple 4 prong setting  in platinum.

i recommend going to NON big box stores. ie. Not Zales, not Kay, etc.

our jeweler did not charge us for setting, but he is a non-Jared big box type.  he does not believe in nickel and diming his customers.  ask around.

@damightybee:  so true. big box stores have poor workmanship in general, send your ring out, take a long time to get it back to you and charge you for every little thing.

@lilsweetie:  You got a steal! No one in my area would set my stone in platinum for less than $150, including the family owned places. They were all about $100 to set a stone in white gold. One jeweller I called said the price was higher for platinum because they have to polish it 4 times, or something.

@luvmesumhim:  I’ve seen white gold settings for as low as $3-400. Setting costs are apparently regional, so just call around. Your jeweller can likely source a setting at a decent price, too (they often have catalogs you can look through in addition to their own inventory, just ask).

The quotes to set ranged between 25-130, the best work coming from the highest and lowest, so go figure.

I had to have my palladium setting altered to hold an oval from a round it cost $100 at our jeweler who is a locally owned store. We worked with one of the co-owners during our entire purchasing process.

@luvmesumhim:  I have always heard that setting a moissy is pretty much the same cost as setting a diamond, but some jewelers who don’t handle moissy may not do it correctly because moissanites are cut differently than diamonds are. I’ve heard stories about jewelers trying to set a moissy the same way they would set a diamond and it coming out loose or something. I would just make sure whatever jeweler you take it to at least KNOWS there’s a difference in setting them before you take it to them. A jeweler that deals moissy will know. Maybe you should take it to the jeweler that you mentioned that carries moissy.

@luvmesumhim

yes, after we shopped Jared, Kays, Zales.  by far, he had the most loose stones and setting collection.  he told us his whole existence in life is to put Jared out of business.  he out bidded Jared. sold us the 3X/F/VVS with setting for the price of just if jared Very good/G/SI stone alone.
