With my alterations lady, it depended on how many “points” she put in.  She charged per “point”.

it totally depends on what type of bustle.. so I’m not sure how you can compare the prices without taking that into consideration

@WeddingStudent: I didn’t really shop around, but I am also a seamstress, so I know what goes into alterations. I based my decision to go with my seamstress on her reputation. If she would have charged twice that much, I probably would have paid her because she is just that good. I would have done my alterations myself, but it is much harder to alter your own clothes than it is to alter other peoples clothes, and I really didn’t want the headache, since I have DIYed a lot of stuff for our wedding and also made my girls dresses.

My bustle cost $10 per bustle (each point that was picked up). I was quoted 7 points, so $70. She actually ended up needing 8 points/bustles to get the job done but she honored the $70.

@WeddingStudent: Are you taking location into consideration? What’s “average” in NYC is definitely not going to be average in a small town.

Mine cost $120. My dress is two layers and the seamstress bustled each layer separately. So the bottom layer is similar to satin (not sure exact fabric) and it has three points. Top layer is really delicate lace and beading, with six points. So $120 for two layer, nine point bustle.

    ETA: Under bustle, not over.
