I was wondering what everyone paid for alterations. I am trying to budget how much it’ll cost because I am concerned it will be a lot. My dress is going to need a lot of alterations because of my shape – big butt, small shoulders. When I was measured I was a size 2/4 up top and 10/12 on the bottom!! So they ordered a 10, which is what the sample was and it was huge on me. The top is lace and has boning so I know it will be difficult.

this is a very regional thing. big cities tend to run absurdly high (upwards up $400 where i live), whereas i’m getting mine done in a medium sized city where i bought the dress for just $150.

My small midwest city told me they’d run about $150-300 just depending on the amount of the work, the dress materials, and the fit to the body. She said she hasn’t seen a dress go out with more than $300 in alterations on it, so maybe just ask around in your area to see what average alterations would be?

Hi and congratulations on your wedding and finding your gown. WE work on wedding gowns everyday and the prices usually range from $50 to $250. There are occasions that the cost is lower or higher depending on what alterations are needed, how delicate and time consuming.
I do recommend working with an independent seamstress rather than the bridal salon. An independent seamstress will probably be more economical and provide more personalized service for you. Check around for a local seamstress. Use the internet, check reviews and ask for references. Choose your seamstress on experience and your connection with her.

I just got my dress back from alterations and I spent $400!! There is no lace or boning on my dress and I went to an independent seamstress. BUT I got a lot done…new neckline, hand sewn on beaded sash, corset back, took in about 4+ sizes, and bustle. When I looked at dresses at DB, they were quoting me $400 for alterations just to put a sweetheart neckline on a dress!

I’m scared too about alteration costs! The boutique is giving me for free either side seam OR hem alteration, but there’s still the bustle that has to be made and if I keep losing weight…
