We found what looked like the perfect house. It had everything on our wish list and then some. BUT… It has oil heat, which is a cash sink we’d like to avoid. And with the house itself near the top of our price range, I’m worried about the cost of converting to a gas or electric heat system. Has anyone else here done that? What was the cost? What pros/cons did you see from your end?

I have not but It probably isn’t that espensive especially if you consider the cost over time. Also the age of the house probaly would dictate how much that may cost.

What kind of oil heat? Is it forced hot air, hot water baseboard, radiators?

I found this number: If you’re switching a forced hot air system, expect to pay between $4,500 and $7,000.
Although– if you’re thinking long term.. the cost of oil is rising ( and will most likely continue to do so), so there’s that.

The original portion of the home was built in the late 60’s; there have been considerable updates and an extention added since then. The existing heat system is forced air. There is also ductwork in place from a central cooling upgrade, if that makes a difference.
