    I don’t have a baby but I know that daycare around here can cost upward of $1000/month. I live in Falls Church but in Fairfax and Arlington it’s probably somewhere around 1200-1500 a month. Insane!

    We live just outside the district in MD, and most of the places we looked at were $1600-$1800/month for infants. Also, wait lists for good places can be ridiculously long, so start looking early! Neighborhood parenting listserves are good places for daycare recommendations, and I also find the DC Urban Moms forum on daycare helpful for this.

    @PitbullLover: I tell my husband I want to move out to Falls Church so I can eat at Eden Center every day. 🙂

    @Lozza: lol I actually live about 10 mins from Eden Center but I haven’t gone there in a while! I live on the outskirts of Falls Church, closer to McLean

    I’m not in VA but am in Boston. A daycare has to be a minumu of $1,200 per month per child in order to comply with the guildelines. Basically if a daycare is less then you need to really look into the credentials.

    @MacFaniam24:

    I’ve started looking at costs and it’s ranging anywhere from $100/week to over $250.

    Have you looked at local day care centers near you yet? I’ve found that a lot of the websites had price breakdowns for half days, full days, 3 day weeks, 5 day weeks, etc.

    @roxy821: why does it need to be at least $1200/month? That seems a little ridiculous!

    I  live in IL and run a daycare out of my home. I charge $125 a week so $500 a month. I haven’t had the issue of siblings come up yet but I think I will only add $50 a week onto the total cost for each additional sibling. Anymore then $150 a week seems ridiculous.

    @roxy821

    I actually like that guideline. Our first choice of daycare is $235/wk, or just over $1000 per month. It is a nice center, but a little cheaper than some of the bigger chains like KinderCare. However, there is a small center near our neighborhood that only charges $150/wk so my cheapo husband wants to check them out. But- this place is SUPER sketchy looking. Honestly, I don’t even like to drive by it. It looks like a crack den and the toys outside probably require certain shots just to play with. But there’s always going to be some place that will undercut costs and provide less than stellar product so I actually think Boston is onto something.

    I wish I still lived there! I was in NOVA and Annapolis. Still trying to move back. Soon hopefully! Anyways, I’m across the river from NYC in the Hoboken area and infant daycares here START at $1,800 monthly. So we hired a nanny for just about the same price. We preferred the one on one care while shes an infant. The cost is so absurd. No wonder so many people stay at home
