It’s probably rude to ask so I apologize if I offend anyone but I was wondering what a typical price is for engagement photos. We aren’t using the same photographer for wedding and engagement because they will take place in different states.
A member of my small group at church does photography as a hobby and only charges $100 for the session and we get a CD of our edited pictures with the copyright papers to print whatever we want. I think this is a fantastic deal and want to go ahead and book a date with her since we want to have our pics done in the mountains and the leaves will be beautiful soon.
Only problem – Fiance thinks I’m rushing like crazy! My mom checked out a venue for us yesterday and we’ve pretty much said yes to it already, he doesn’t want me to make any rash decisions and regret it later.
I’ve seen some of her work and I like it, I think she would do a great job. Do you think it sounds like a good deal?

A LOT of photographers offer engagement pictures as part of the wedding package, and one of the benefits is that they “get to know you” prior to the day of your wedding!
$100 alone for engagement pictures sounds quite cheap–almost nervously so! (that’s for 1 or more hours with you? well are they going to spend any time editing the pictures?)
Depending on how much you are thinking of spending on wedding pictures total, I would definitely hold off until once you have reserved a wedding photogrpaher.

that is definitely a deal and it sounds like she’s just getting started. if you like what you see, i don’t know that you’d get a better deal!

This is similar to what we did for our engagement photos, since we couldn’t afford the $500 cost of our regular photographer. I wasn’t as worried about getting an amateur photographer for engagement photos because they are mostly posed shots, so I had a good idea of what I was getting into from our friend’s portfolio (we weren’t nervous about missing good candid shots like for a wedding!)
We thought $100 was a pretty minimal investment so if we didn’t like it, we could always book a session with our professional wedding photographer. Our friend did a fabulous job, we helped her build up more of a portfolio and even referred some of our newly engaged friends to her, so it all turned out pretty win-win-win 🙂

Ours would’ve been $350..but the photog gave it to us for free after we booked her for the big day, she knew about our tight budget so she worked with us.

our photographer would have charged $500 for them, so this is a smokin’ deal!

Ours was included in our photo package, but I believe a session is $250

Mines came with my wedding package so it was a steal

If I wouldn’t have won my session, the photographer we used, charges $500! That’s just for taking the pictures, and a cd with the edited prints! I can’t imagine actually having to pay that amount. Fiance and I decided we were just going to have my little brother take some, before I had won the session at a bridal show. To me, yes, the pictures are important, but not as important as the wedding pictures. So spending 100’s of dollars on them, in my opinion, is a little bit ridiculous. Most photographers though, if you book them for the wedding, a lot of packages include the engagement session, and some even include a TTD session after the wedding too!

Just e-pics? In the range of $300-1000. At $100 I’d expect them to LOOK like $100 (which IMO probably wouldn’t be fantastic).

This is just for e-pics, we can’t use the same photographer because we are living in Tennessee but will have the wedding in Missouri.
Keep in mind that East TN has a much lower cost of living than any big cities! Our budget is $3,000 but Fiance wants to keep it more at $1500 and put the rest in savings (Oh Dave Ramsey would be proud).
@BirdofaFeather: You hit the nail on the head 🙂 She is getting started in photography and really does it as more of a hobby.
@MM423: that’s really encouraging, thank you so much!
@red_rose: since it’s a friend through church I’m sure she would take as many hours as needed, she also edits the pictures and we will get a CD of them.
Yesterday a friend referred me to a girl who did her pics and she only charges $150 so now we are trying to decide between the two of them. The more expensive one does 1-2 hrs of shooting, and said we will get between 60-75 edited pictures, an online gallery, and copyrights.
Now I’m not sure what to do!

Our photographer charges $250 for a stand-alone engagement session, but ours is included in our wedding package.
