I’m not so sure about mall jewlers, the problem being that even though it might be cheaper it will take longer since most if not all of them ship the rings out to be sized. I personally would go to a local jewler with a good reputation that does the work there. It depends on the ring and the jewler but around here the price ranges from about $40-$60.

Mine cost about $30 at a local jeweler.  I have a platinum ring and only went down half a size.

My Fiance took a ring he bought be for valentine’s day (not my engagement ring) to a jeweler in Chinatown in NYC and they re-sized it for $15 or $20 while he waited. They did a great job, too, it looks perfect! The place was recommended by the vintage store where we bought the ring–I think a local jeweler is your best bet.

Not to thread-jack but what about the costs associated with getting a ring dipped?

@Miss Orchard:  I think I’ve seen estimates between $30-$60.

Our ring was a designer setting so it was a free resize down but would cost $30 to resize up because they would have had to add gold.

For me, it cost $50-$60 each time. also, it depends– do you have a plain band, or are there lots of side stones? the more stones there are, the more it can cost becaue they have to go back and tighten all of the prongs.  (so I think $60 would be about the highest price.)

We were able to pay a flat fee that allows for free resizing (up or down) for as long as I own the ring. My wedding band is white gold (engagement ring is platinum) and we got the free resizing as well as free redipping. I figured it was well worth it b/c I have some health issues and take Prednisone (a steroid that can cause weight gain) a lot – so resizing may be a yearly thing. See if you can do something like that if you think you may need to resize more than twice (for us, I want to say at that jewelry store resizing was like $40-$60 each time, and the lifetime package was $140 or so).

The local jewlers near me (not chain stores but mom and pop shops) charge around $50 – $60 to resize assuming it’s white gold.  $30 to resize and $30 to re-rhodium plate it.  One jeweler told me they always rhodium plate it after working on it because it’s dull afterwards.

I paid $35 about a year ago to size a ring down. Sizing down isn’t as expensive because they don’t need to add gold. That’s where it gets pricey.
