My jeweler quoted me —  I think — less than $200 for a similar job.

In my case, it’s an old ring where we had the “basket” and diamond removed. So it’s a gold ring with a gap where the diamond used to be.

I asked the jeweler what it would cost to have a loose stone put in, and he said a “basket” for the loose stone would run maybe $100-$150, and the work to attach it to the ring would be another $50 or so. Something like that.

it will all depend on the stone, the setting and the jeweller.

i would suggest taking it to someone who will do it on-site, not send it out to their head office.

Usually it only costs $20-50, IF ANY, to set a stone from another vendor. Though most Jeweler’s will do it for free if you’re buying the setting from them.

@peonyinlove:  why not have the jeweler making the setting set it? That way they can make the setting specific to the stone? IIRC, you’re buying an antique diamond, right? (PS I’d love to know what you ended up choosing! I was one of the posters that gave you suggestions on Pricescope!). Antiques are always wonky & not quite perfectly round. It’d be a shame to set it in something trade perfectly round, and it gets air gap.

@peonyinlove No problem at all! I really enjoy diamonds and rings, and I can’t buy em all for myself, so helping others fills my happiness! ^__^. Your plan sounds great. I wouldn’t ship anything to Thailand, either… Trans-continental panics me! Please post pics here or on PS when you get it!!
