Hubby and i are planning our honeymoon. We were hoping for thailand but we decided with spending a day traveling each way we just wouldnt have enough time.
Weve now decided on costa rica! Just curious if anyones been there and what your itinerary looked like, what area did you stay in, etc.. Also, im conflicted between a beautiful resort or getting a secluded hut with a view.
Some background: i like to spend time in the water pools/beach, with a drink in hand. Id like to do this for at least a day or two. We both like adventures, and we like to mingle with locals, visit some markets, etc.
Any tips on where to stay, what areas to visit, must dos, are greatly appreciated!

9 years ago I stayed at the Tabacon with the hot springs. It was amazing. For Costa Rica, I recommend staying at 2 places. Do a few days inland near Arenal and the rest on the coast.

I also honeymooned in Costa Rica in February 2016 for two weeks and we were so happy with our decision. We aren’t resort people, so we travelled around using a combination of public buses/private taxis. We flew into Liberia and went straight to Santa Elena to visit the Monteverde Cloud Forest (http://www.monteverdeinfo.com/) and did a night tour to see animals and ziplining through the forest (definitely a thrill). Then we went to La Fortuna where the biggest highlight was spending a day at Tabacon Grand Spa Thermal Resort (best to book in advance) – it’s a natural hotspring at the base of Arenal volcano. We did the full day pass that included a buffet dinner, but did not stay at the resort. We spent the second week at the beach. We went to Playa Brasilto, which was secluded, but rustic if you’re up for that. In Guanacaste Province there are a ton of resorts to stay at as well. We tried to eat “local”, which is usually rice and beans. Some restaurants had a better variation of this than others, but it did get boring after a while. That being said, we found some nice restaurants in each of the places we stayed.

LOVE Costa Rica! My DH is there a lot for work, and it really is the perfect combo of beach and adventure!
I’d suggest staying flying into San Jose and spending 4-5 days in rainforest at the Arenal Volcano area. There’s a lot to do : hiking, ziplining, horseback riding, white water rafting, hot springs, etc. Then I’d go and spend 3-4 days in the Jaco area at the beach. That way you get the adventure first, and then relax before heading home.
I stay at the Los Suenos Marriott Ocean & Golf Resort because it’s near where my DH has to be for work….but there are plenty of other places too.
I’ve also stayed at the Arenal Observatory Lodge & Peace Lodge. The AEL wasn’t the fanciest place but it was nice and the best location with views of the Arenal Volcano.
