I’ve been thinking about getting a membership to one of the warehosue clubs around here for doing some of our shopping.
I hear good things about both Costco and Sam’s Club (both of which are close to me) so I was hoping to get the opinions of some Bees.
What warehouse club do you shop at?

@Mrs.KMM: I’ve only ever shopped at Costco and I love it. Their selection is great and their return policy is really flexible.

I don’t shop at Costco or Sam’s Club. I’ve had a membership at Sam’s in the past and was always frustrated at the lines there when trying to check out.
I see you’re in Atlanta. Do you have a BJ’s there? It’s where we do our bulk shopping now, and the lines are much shorter. If we stop by after work, we’re usually able to get right to a self serve register, pay, and get out.

We get lots of our staples at Costco. They have great prices on good quality cheese, eggs, coffee, nuts, toilet paper and paper towels, etc. Around here, we don’t have Sam’s, but growing up both were available and I liked Costco a lot better. I think their merchandise tends to be of better quality.

I HATE Costco with all my strength. Hate that it is so crowded all the time and think that very often the employees are rude. With that said, I bought some stuff there. Was it worth the membership? I don’t know. But the rotisserie chicken was decent and so was the pizza. I liked the nuts, the milk and the ribs!
Howver we now live in an area that has just Sam’s club and I got a membership yesterday because livingsocial had a deal. I have never been to one, so let’s see how it compares to Costco…

Costco all the way. It’s actually one of the few companies that treats it’s employees well. Sam’s Club, which is part of Walmart, has horrific business practices.

@strawbabies: I’ve never heard of BJs and it doesn’t look like there is one near me. Apparently there are a couple in the Atlanta area (I just googled) but not on the side of the city where I live.

We love our Costco! The employees at ours are all super friendly and helpful. Some people at the one by my mom are a little snippy (and they’re coupon Nazis!) but that depends on so many things. We had a Sam’s membership when I was living at home in High School, and I like the stuff at Costco better. I think it’s nicer, but you get what you pay for, so you can end up spending more money. They still have great deals on a lot of stuff, too.

I have a Costco membership and my parents have a Sam’s club membership. I’ll be honest with you, as a customer, there really is’t that much of a difference in my experience (if someone blindfolded me and put me inside one of them, then too the blindfold off, I wouldn’t know which one I was in until I started looking at the brand names of stuff). I’m sure there are differences in their business practices and things like that, but strictly for buying shit, they’re pretty much the same.
I’ve noticed that Sam’s has more furniture and kitchen stuff. Costco is kind of lacking in the kitchen appliance area (at least the one here is). I guess it really depends on what you intend to buy. I think Sam’s membership is a little cheaper, but not much. Maybe by 5 or 10 bucks a year.
We get all of our liquor and wine at Costco, but I’ve purchased the exact same at Sam’s for pretty much the same price.
Personally I would just get a membership to whichever one is closest to you lol. That’s why I went with Costco.

Costco is so much better, and it’s a company I don’t have to feel like a souless, terrible person for giving my money to. Sam’s Club has awful corporate policies and working conditions and pay. The employees at Costco are paid a living wage and get benefits.

I love Costco. I’ve been trying to set aside some extra money to make a run to the one near me, but I haven’t had the chance.

Canadian here… so we don’t have Sam’s Club (that I know of)
Don’t belong to Costco either… as there is just the 2 of us, Mr TTR and I don’t see the value in the Membership ($ 55 or $ 110) because most things there are:
(a) too gigantic for us to store or use in a reasonable amount of time
(b) everything else (electronics and such) can be found elsewhere at the same or better pricing… if one shops around does their homework… not that difficult if one is even a wee bit internet savvy.
Occasionally, we have done a “wee bit” of Costco Shopping tho if we happen to go along with a friend etc. But then it is more a case of a spontaneous type of purchase than a need etc (I might buy a book if I see one I like, because their prices are less than what I can find at Chapters / Indigo)

Agree with the comments about Employers. Sam’s Club is of course part of the Walmart world… which has horrible company practices all around (I do not shop at Walmart because of what I’ve learned about them on the global scale). Costco is regarded as one of the top companies to work for here in Canada… they pay their employees really well (best rates in retail) and have a good benefits program as well.
Just the same… I do take issue with any company that charges me a fee to shop there (but especially the Walmart retail bullies). It makes no sense at all WHY someone has to pay a Membership Fee when their books clearly show their profits are HUGE. Definitely part of the reason we don’t belong.
