I’m finally starting to do the DJ search more officially, and am trying to get a sense of what we should expect to pay. We (hopefully) want to cap our budget at $1,000. (Wow, even writing that sounds insane. Anywho…)
We’re getting married at Bear Mountain (outside NYC about an hour), and I contacted the DJs on the vendor recommendation list. One listed a package of $1,100 that seemed to include more than what we want (and he said we could negotiate). Others didn’t list price, but one person I spoke with said that for what want (basic music, not other fancy stuff), would be at least $1,400. Then, when I said we hoped to stay under $1,000, he said something about how often people who charge less may not be as good quality. Which could very well be true.
I know DJ costs can vary based on the area. Is it unreasonable to find a DJ for $1,000 for ceremony/cocktail hour/reception, if it’s just music and I guess lighting? (Do we even need lighting?)

- Wedding: March 2010 - Ritz-Carlton, Half Moon Bay
mrs. butterfly spent $1350 on her DJ in NYC back in 2007. your wedding isn’t going to be in NYC, so the cost would probably be lower, on the other hand that was a few years ago, so $1400 sounds fair (but of course NYC prices are so skewed so take what i say with a grain of salt). *but* i don’t think it’s necessarily the best price you can get. you could probably find an up and coming dj who’s really good and isn’t charging as much right now.
by the way i love bear mountain. i was just there a few weeks ago! what a beautiful area for a wedding!

Thank you both for your feedback! I appreciate having comparisons.
My friend recently got married in California and her DJ was $950 i think? So it seems like our budget shouldn’t be TOO unreaasonable…

In NC we paid $600 for 5.5 hrs.

Our DJ who is very popular right now in NYC starts at 1,600.
Are you thinking about hiring from NYC? if so, to bear mountain you will likely pay a travel fee.
I would suggest looking closer to Bear Mountain.
I looked at MANY DJs in the NYC/LI region and most of them ranged from 1400-2,000for basic. Just DJing.
Depending on your setup (ceremony, cocktail, reception) the price can go up.
I think if you look hard enough you can probably find one for under 1k.

Thanks Gerbera and Eseds for the more local quotes and the feeddback. The places I’ve been calling are recommended by the venue, so they aren’t based in NYC. Though, that being said, there are very likely other things that would boost the cost a bit.
I’m new to this DJ search…so maybe for the area, we’ll just have to do some budget tweeking, especially since the average seems to be higher than what I was expeecting.

Have you checked out FM Entertainment? They are based in Long Island. I never met with them but have heard good things. For 2010 they started at $900 for a base package.

We paid about $2,200 in the NYC area for our DJ and we didnt have anything too fancy. So I’d say $1,400 is very reasonable!

My cousin ranges from $600-$1000 for 5 hours depending on if you want lighting and other extras. He doesn’t have the best website, but he really is great! He will be doing my wedding and I know he does many types of events all the time.
