Could this have been a chemical?!

Hi Bee, so sorry you are going through this unknown and emotional turmoil! I am going through a chemical right now, and my first sign of it was that after a first positive HPT on 11dpo, the line never grew any stronger (I tested the following 6 days, and the line grew slightly fainter each day using 4 different brands of HPT, although the digital read “pregnant” even 16dpo) However, take that with a grain of salt because from what I have read, each chemical pregancy will look different from the next woman’s. I have also had a great deal of clotting in my bleeding, which I do not see in my regular period. My doc said the only reason I ever knew I had a chemical is because the FRER tests basically tell you when you are a minute pregnant, and most women in my situation would never have known they just had a chemical pregnancy, and so I should not worry.

I first saw spotting at 16dpo before I went to bed (only 2-3 days after normal missed period), spotted more on Christmas, and began bleeding heavily at 18dpo and immediately went into the doctor after consulting with the dr on call. My HCG was 11 at 18dpo and by 20dpo was 1.9.

I am hesitant to offer any advice as I am no medical professional (I’ve put in my fair share of hours on Dr. Google, ha, I know that counts for nothing ๐Ÿ˜‰ I wonder if you had a fertilized egg that attempted to implant on the early side, but didn’t implant? My OBGYN said it is extremely common to experience a fertilized egg that fails to properly implant and results in a chemical and not to worry if this appears to have happened.

Do you have any idea if you would need a Rhogam shot? I don’t know much about the Rhogam shot, except that I am RH- and my husband is +, so my doctors have clamored all over me to give me a shot of Rhogam or MicroRhogam each time I began bleeding with my miscarriage and then this time, even though it was not a clinically diagnosed pregnancy.

MrsG2BIre :  Not knowing for sure truly is the hardest. Wishing you lots of baby dust in 2018! Even a possible chemical is a sign your body is trying to make a baby! Happy New Year! xoxo

It’s really hard to say, given that things have already been “in process” now for a few days. When I had my chemical, I didn’t have any abnormal bleeding; I spotted for two days and then had what I would consider like a normal period for 4ish days following that, normal flow, cramps, etc. I did another HPT as soon as the bleeding was done and it was completely negative. It also sounds like the spotting/bleeding started earlier than you expected, which is typically the opposite of the experience with a chemical (period is late). Everyone is different though so again, it’s tough to say!

Unless you could confirm a pregnancy with a positive, even a very faint squinter, I wouldn’t assume it was a chemical. There is no need to go through the heart break or the stress in thinking it was one.

Personally, when I had a chemical pregnancy, it started two days after my period was due. I bled very lightly for about 5 hours, that was it. I did not have intense cramps or pain and it was lighter/shorter than my period. I got a positive test two days before and then the lines faded to nothing.

Sorry you are going through this and for your struggles to conceive, but I would chalk it up to a very strange cycle. Since it has been a year, hopefully your doctor can provide more answers and guidance.

Based on my own miscarraige experience I would guess that you might have had at least a squinter the day the bleeding started.  But who knows.  Every body and every pregnancy is different.  I had my miscarriage 9 months in to TTC so I was devastated.  My doctor told me though, it’s so common and could be a wonderful sign that my body did get pregnant.  He also said you could be extra fertile for about the next three cycles so if you’re mentally up for it to start trying right away.  He ended with if there’s nothing wrong with me or my husband that back to back miscarriages are rare unless again, there’s a problem needing investigating.

I got pregnant 3 months later and am just about 13 weeks now.  I pray everything continues as well as it has been.

Hang in there Bee.  TTC is NOT for the faint of heart.
