Okay I need help –
For legal and immigration purposes, my boyfriend and I want to get married by the court with us just two knowing about it, and maybe a year later plan a full blown church wedding and reception. How can I do this? Won’t the pastor/person marrying us ask us for the marraige license? We will already be married…
I want the wedding ceremony to be the real thing, the only reason we are doing the court house marraige is for the paperwork. I want everyone at the ceremony to think that is our first time getting married….
The whole point is to keep it from my family… grr

I’m pretty sure it will be nearly impossible to keep this from your future officiant. Would your family be supportive if you married now? Maybe they will agree with your reasoning and agree to a beautiful wedding/vow renewal later.

Ministers are required by their vows to keep your secrets. You can tell your story to a minister and they will not/cannot share with anyone else…they may not agree to do the marriage but i bet they will.

You’ll have to tell your officiant, because part of their job is to make sure that your wedding is legal. That being said, many officiants understand that people may need to get married for legal reasons prior to their wedding. Not all wedding officiants are ministers or bound to keep your secret, but most are good people who will.
My fiance and I are getting married next October, but will be having a “signing paperwork” ceremony, with the same officiant who is performing our wedding, in January. We are keeping it a secret, and our officiant had no problem with it.
