So Fiance and I are both atheists and our families are different religons so we didn’t really see a point in spending $400+ on a ceremony that would last only 20 mins at most and not be very meaningful to us. So we’re thinking of getting dressed up in our wedding best and going to the courthouse during a weekday and then having our photographer take the typical wedding pictures of us. Not pictures of us in the courthouse but pictures at a local park or something with us in our wedding clothes.
That weekend we’re planning on just having a reception (75-100 people depending on decline rate). The thing is we’re both students and paying for everything ourselves so we’re not going to have a DJ (we’ll IPOD DJ) or a bar (neither of us drink – at all, ever).
My plan is that we’ll have appetizers setup in a side room where people can wait til we get the reception hall ready – this will have 4-5 appetizer buffet and a beverage area with iced tea/lemonade in dispensers with plastic cups – so very self serve.
Then we’ll open up the “banquet hall” where we’ll do a little speech and then open up the buffer (we’re doing Indian). After everyone eats, we’ll have the toasts, maybe a slideshow, and then do our cake cutting and open up the dessert buffet. After that we’ll play some music and have an area for dancing if anyone wants to (I doubt they will but still)… Also, with the indian buffet and not having a bartender, we’re just going to have cans of soda/iced tea/lemonade for people to take with plastic cups and ice.
The timeline we’re thinking for the day is:
Cocktail/appetizer hour: 6-7pm – we assume people will be arriving during this time too and college friends who haven’t seen each other in a while can talk
7-7:15pm – get everyone seated, say a little welcome speech
7:15-8:15 – Buffet, call each table up and give everyone time to get their food and eat/go for seconds
8:15-8:45 – Toasts/speeches
8:45 – cake cutting, open up dessert buffet, let people mingle/dance
10:00 – kick everyone out
How does my timeline look and will it be tacky to have no bartender/serve soda cans and will not having a DJ make for a really short and/or boring reception. Any ideas on how to spice things up in a noncheesy way?
Our wedding budget right now for the venue, food, photography, everything but clothes is less than $4000 right now and with the honeymoon it comes to a little over $5000 (yay for cruises). We could add a DJ but I’ve never had a good experience with DJs, I think I might actually hate them. I can’t find any good options for a soda bar in our area, there’s a caterer we could hire that would be 4/person but 400 just to provide the same things we can for 100…
