So, here’s the deal, we had planned on doing a regular wedding and reception, then the plan changed to going to Puerto Rico with just our family and right as I was about to book the whole thing, poof, I’m out of a job! So now we are headed to the courthouse to get married. We will have a small entourage with us, but I’m not sure what to wear. I already have my wedding gown and it is a fairly traditional looking gown. It does not have a train though, and I’m not wearing a veil. Thing is, I just found out today that they changed the typical venue from the town court house which was a nice new building to the town jail. 🙁 I’m kind of saddened by this, but we are making jokes about it. I just don’t know if I should wear my gown or if I should just do some white slacks and a shirt which I do have but I would really like to wear my gown, I just don’t want to look ridiculous. What do you all think? We aren’t having professional pictures taken either, my sister will take some with her camera.

Wear your gown! Why not? Are you going to have an opprotunity to wear your gown at a later date? Fiance is military and we are doing a courthouse wedding, and then a bigger one later on, so I have a short dress for the courthouse, and a full size gown for the big wedding.

Aww…I think you should try to wear your gown!

I’d wear the dress for sure!
Now if your dress is resellable as is and you need the $, consider selling it and going for a more informal dress.
I had a full on wedding planned and bought a Casablanca gown with a train. Now that is cancelled and I’m driving my dress 18 hours up to Canada to have an outdoor elopement in the mountains. I will even probably hike in my dress.

@cutelildeadbear: The contrast between the two might be nice. Or, you can always try and do it in another city/county. =)

Do you have a photo of the gown and the location? I do think it’s OK for the bride to be the overdressed one though!

Definitely wear your gown! You bought it, I’m sure it’s gorgeous, wear it! You want to marry the love of your life in it, should it matter the surroundings?
My brother got married in the courthouse and everyone was dressed nice but not reception nice. My sister in law wore a really nice white shirt and a black skirt and my brother wore a shirt and tie.

I totally understand not wanting to look out of place. If you feel comfortable then rock it! If not you could do a short white lace dress. I just bought a dress & shoes for our civil ceremony for ~$50:
(if you give them your e-mail you get a 25% off coupon)
and then these shoes
Very inexpensive option!
