So, my great-uncle passed away this week, and his visitations are on Friday, funeral on Saturday. My little cousin’s 16th birthday is Friday too, and she’s pretty upset about the timing. I feel so bad for her…16 is supposed to be such a milestone birthday, and I’m sure she and her friends had something planned. But instead, she has to spend the weekend 10 hours away from her friends, saying goodbye to our uncle, who was definitely her “buddy” when she was little. 🙁
I want to do something small for her to help cheer her up and still recognize her birthday…a card, of course, but what else? I don’t want to take away from the purpose of the weekend — honoring our uncle’s life — but I don’t want her to remember her 16th birthday as a completely horrible time either.
I was thinking of getting her a small framed print of a picture I have of her and our uncle together from when she was little, but…I don’t know if that would make it better or worse. I don’t want to “rub it in”, so to speak, by giving her a picture of them together that might just remind her all the more of the rotten timing and rotten birthday. But I don’t know what else would be small and unobtrusive to the day, yet still meaningful.
What do you think?
