I was just reading something on another site about using a cover song vs an original for first dance songs.
Since we’re using covers for 2 of our main songs – Our first dance and Mother/Son dance – It got me wondering how many Bee’s chose a cover over an original for their special songs, and what they are.
Also, would you have even considered the original version?
First Dance – True Love Travels on a Gravel Road covered by Afghan Whigs, original by Elvis
Mother/Son – You are My Sunshine covered by Johnny Cash, original ????
I probably would not have chosed the original of True Love Travels. I didn’t even know the song until I heard the Whigs version. And to me, their version is so much more soulful than Elvis. I’m not an Elvis fan though. I usually like most covers of his stuff better than the original.
We picked You are My Sunshine first and then decided on the version. So we would have used it regardless, but once I heard the Johnny Cash version I knew that was it. There won’t be a dry eye in the house when that dance happens. 🙂

I didn’t pick any cover versions of songs for my wedding, but I really like covers. I love to see what another artist does with a song, especially one I’m already familar with. I like to hear the song in a whole new way.
Sometimes, I still prefer the original, but other times…I have to say I like the cover better.

I’m going to use quite a few covers, but mostly because I’m having my string quartet play Radiohead 😉
First dance might be Adele’s cover of Lovesong by The Cure. I think it’s lovely, even though my bridemaid told me it was the most depressing song she’d ever heard and how could I possibly dance to it. ?

I walked down the aisle to a Vitamin String Quartet version of All I Want Is You by U2. The reason I did was because it was an orchestral version with no words.
For other songs I think it’s entirely your choice, I wouldn’t judge anyone for using a cover unless I really hated the version they chose and even then, it’s their choice. Go with what you like.
And You Are My Sunshine is an extremely old song so I doubt there even is an “original” version.

@KristenGotMarried: Oohhh! I’ll have to check that Adele cover out! I didn’t know she did that, and I’m an old school Cure fan!
@Neva: I agree. I love covers too. I have a bunch of CD compilations of other artists doing one artist’s song. Some are better than the original and some are a travesty, LOL. But, it’s cool to see another person’s interpretation of a song you love. I agree. 🙂

Aw, I love that Cash cover.
I was thinking Lauryn Hill’s version of “Can’t take my eyes off you” but that’s still up for debate. I’m really liking the VSQ too – someone posted about one of their songs, and now I’m all about them. Possibly using “Two is Better THan One’ for the recessional.

@atalante: That Lauryn Hill song is so pretty. 🙂
@kala_way: I’m comfortable with my choices I was just curious about what other people are doing. Just a silly question. 🙂
You’re totally right about You are My Sunshine. I think it’s just considered an american standard. If you You Tube it, it comes up with a million versions.

I walked down the aisle to Here, There and Everywhere by the Beatles, with the bridesmaids processing to I’m Yours by Jason Mraz. Both songs were played on guitar by the groom’s brother, specifically because we wanted instrumental version, and it was so personal and wonderful to have his brother be the musician. All our other songs/dances were the original versions, but we happily would’ve used covers if we had liked them more.

We used VSQ covers of a lot of songs for our pre-ceremony music so that we could have modern songs we liked played in a more traditional way. I walked in to Peter Gabriel’s cover of “The Book of Love” by The Magnetic Fields. I haven’t even heard the original, but Darling Husband and I both love Peter Gabriel, so that was a no-brainer.
