Maybe there is another reason that she doesn’t want to share. She could be highly allergic and maybe everyone in the office knows but you? There could be a million reasons but on a positive note she obviously feels close enough to you to ask.

Does it really make that much difference to return the gift?

    She’s not petty, she’s rude.

I don’t understand. Does she want you to get her something else or does she want you to keep the store credit?

I wouldn’t bother returning lip balm. That is a waste of time for the cost of the gift. If she asks about it in the future, I would just say I’ve been too busy to make a trip to the store and hope she doesn’t bring it up again.

Chances are they won’t take something back if it was a free gift (With the lotion as you said.) You can tell her that, too.

There could be many reasons why she doesn’t/can’t want it. I would just let it roll off your back, truthfully.

@LadyLuna711:  I would just get her something else then.

I mean after all you didn’t actually pay for this gift as it was a free item with purchase.

Why would the OP need to go out of her way to get her coworker a different gift or return a gift if the coworker didn’t like it? I would never ask someone to return a gift they bought me because I didn’t like it or couldn’t use it. You either figure out how to return it yourself, throw it away or re-gift it to someone else.

Perhaps you can suggest she go there and exchange it for something she might like better?

@star_dust:  I didn’t say what the co-worker did was right but since the coworker had the balls to ask and did so in front of other coworkers, my advice was based on that. The OP should just get her another gift or she will look like the b*tch especially if there is a legit reason why the coworker asked for it to be returned.

@LadyLuna711:  I get that it sucks but you said it is a new work place. I would just buy her something else so that it doesn’t bite you on the butt.
