Diamonds totally crack–don’t get me wrong, you’d have to whack really hard in the exact right place to crack it but they chip and break just like anything else.  They don’t really degrade–hence the diamond is forever bull–so technically a new diamond is just as likely as an older diamond to crack.  A diamond that has wear and tear on it already would probably crack a little bit easier than something that is in mint condition.

Check to see if your diamond has been clarity enhanced–they will drill out inclusions and fill in the holes with glass or something similar to make the stone look better.  If they did that, perhaps their filler fell out.

I’d talk to the people who made the ring but first I’d have a completely different shop and jeweler take a look at the diamond.  Bring your paperwork from when you bought the loose stone and make sure to bring any certifications.  Just ask them to match the stone to what was sold to you–they may charge a fee for this–pay it, it’s worth it.  Then, if they switched out stones or something like that you can say that another jeweler verified that the stone was not the one on the certificate and go from there.

Definitely talk to teh jeweler. Is your ring insured? If so, then regardless of how the crack got there, it can be replaced easily.

@schlaengchen: If you didn’t know and it’s not the custom, how could you have known? Unfortunately, I’m more familiar with America adn sometimes get a bit egocentric so I’m sorry. I’ll be keeping you in my thoughts and hopefully the jeweler can do something to fix it.

Diamonds can crack.  Just one of the very easy ways is if they are worn in the shower–the change in temperature can be too much for them.
