I can totally understand what you are going through! Your post describes to a T what Ive been batteling in our new house for the last year. I had the same nasty smell thy was emanating for the ductwork and would get better with Saran wrap. Ppl would say I was crazy too but you know when there is a smell an it’s so frustrating. I finally solved the problem. It turns out that the ducts under the ductwork had developed cracks at the joints of the ducts and were pulling in air from the crawlspace. On a hot day the air would waft up even more. Nasty! We had a heating/ac company come out and seal up the ducts and the register boxes. Problem totally solved! Good luck!

Did you try cedar scented moth balls? Musty smells get eradicated by them. Change them once a month.

@lindseyrose:  Make sure they’re the cedar scented ones, the “real” mothballs could end up smelling your house. So I would rather cedar smell then yucky. LOL

The fact that the carpet is wet is a really bad sign.  Wet floor means mold is not far behind.  Hopefully, it hasn’t been wet long or you might already have mold growing.

@lindseyrose:  Can you pull up any part of the carpet?  I wouldn’t do this without a mask, just in case.  If there’s mold, it will be black or brown underneath and I’d imagine the smell would be worse.  Obviously, you don’t want to play around with this stuff.

I’m going to be honest: it seems like there is a water/moisture problem. The fact that your landlord is denying that the floor is wet while you’re walking around with wet socks is not a good scene.  I’d call her back and tell her what’s going on.  You shouldn’t be paying for someone to come in and look at duct work.  That’s her responsibility.
