I personally do not like whipped because I need to taste the sugar haha  cream cheese all the way!

Do not do whipped cream.  It doesn’t travel well.  I would just bit the bullet and do full on cream cheese

I think I’m one of the few who REALLY doesn’t like cream cheese, so I would just go with full on cream cheese.

Traditional buttercream frostings aren’t nearly as sweet i.e. not American buttercream. A french buttercream would fit your criteria. I agree that whipped cream is not a good frosting for a wedding cake. It doesn’t travel well and will melt much easier. 

Here is the Wilton recipe for French buttercream calling for 2/3 cup sugar. 


And here is the recipe for the American buttercream, which calls for FOUR CUPS of confectioners sugar.



I would sit down with your baker and ask her to make up some different frostings for you to try out. But i would suggest to her a french buttercream if you are looking for something that isnt super sweet.
