I’ll be interested to see the replies to this question too!  We inherited a lovely crib from a friend, but it needs a new mattress.  Baby girl will be sleeping in our room at night in a co-sleeper for the first little while, but I’d like to have her napping in her crib so she gets used to being in there too!

I haven’t done too much research so far, but when I do, I get so overwhelmed with all the options!

Hopefully others will pipe up with their recommendations for or against ๐Ÿ™‚

I was wondering about foam vs coil.  What are your reasons for going with foam?

I started looking at mattresses a couple of months back, but had to stop after reading horrible things about non-organic mattresses. It’s not like I sleep on an organic mattress or anything, but damn, people know how to make you paranoid about poisoning your child. Organic mattresses are expensive though, and I can’t really figure out if they are actually better. Another boring thing to research that I’ll shove under the rug until I’m forced to think about it. ๐Ÿ™‚

I have always gotten the cheapest foam mattress I could find.  I got my current one at Walmart.  My husband also has a fear of the springs coming through the mattress covering.  I never worried about the support in the mattress.  I am fine with cheap!

I got a Colgate foam one. It was only $140 or so. It’s really lightweight for me and firm for the baby. I’m happy with it.

@regberadaisy: Another one I am looking at is the Sealy Soybean Foam-Core Crib Mattress.

We have that one and I love it. It fits into our crib tightly, but easily enough comes out to change the sheet. It’s got square corners so there are no gaps between the cri and mattress either. DS sleeps really well on it too. We haven’t had any issues at all.

I wanted an organic foam mattress because of the gases/chemicals used to produce mattresses. There was a study (in Norway I think) about mattresses being linked to SIDS because they off gas for a while after production. We have a foam mattress for our bed too, in part for that reason.
