Okay, so I am trying to decide which one of these makes more sense to purchase… I’ve looked on the old threads talking about cricut and silhouette but the biggest difference that was made in the past is that you need to buy cartridges for cricut so the investment is less solid than the silhouette.
HOWEVER, now that the Sure Cuts A Lot software exists and lets you pretty much make any image you want for the Cricut to use, it seems like the playing field is a bit more leveled.

I don’t own either, but I have been able to play with my neices Cricut and I thought it was very easy to use, and it seemed there was alot to do with it. I am really wanting to buy one for myself.

I am not too familiar with silhouette. I do have a cricut and literally just got sure cuts a lot 2 a couple of days ago and I am completely obsessed with it! It is fabulous! So obviously that is my preference. 🙂

I voted for Silhouette SD because I just got one for Christmas. Have not used it yet but the reason I chose it over the Cricut is because I did not want to buy cartridges. I like being able to buy individual designs and using any font you want. Not sure how much sure cuts a lot cost, but that would have been an added expense. Plus the Sil was cheaper. It also has the drawing pen feature and can do rhinestone appliques. So far after looking at tutorials on you tube it looks very easy to use.

@DeaconBride: thanks for your input–I really like the idea of the Silhouette too but the price makes me a little more weary. I tried out Sure Cuts A Lot v 2 just to see how the program works and it seems like you can do custom designs pretty easily with that. I was considering getting the smaller (personal) Cricut which is on sale right now at Joann Fabrics so it would be a little less than the Silhouette.
Has anyone out there used the Sure Cuts A Lot program a LOT and can comment on it??
And is the Personal versus the Expression really THAT big of a difference–I know the Expression is much larger but I’m not sure if I need that right now…

Yes, there is quite a difference between the personal and the Expression. I have the Cricut Create (which is between the personal and the expression). That may be a good solution for you. I have been using my Sure Cuts A Lot 2 allllll day today and it really is awesome. You can get an image from the internet and it can cut it out for you. I doubt I will ever need to buy a cartridge other than the one that cam e with it. You can get an instant download of SCAL2 for $49.95. It is totally worth it in my opinion.

Um, so.., my new besties on WB, who is going to lend me their cricut

I would definitely recommend getting the Expression. There’s a huge difference in space available.
I haven’t used Sure Cuts a Lot, but I’ve used Make the Cut, which is similar. I don’t cut anything with the cartridges and only with the program.

I love working with sure cuts alot, its very easy to use and theres lots of tutorials out there on how to make you own svgs and use all the features.
I would definitely go with the Expression it can cut up to 12in x 24in, where as the personal only cuts 6×12. You can cut more at once or do larger projects.

@snuggles, I just completed my invites on my Silhouette. They came out GREAT!!! It is all a matter of preference. After my research, I decided that I did not want to buy cartridges and I can buy individual images, plus they offer a free image every week.
I did not wnat to buy software which is why I decided against the Cricut.
