A crinoline has layers of tulle to make the dress poofy.  A hoop skirt actually has a few hoops in it to make the dress sit wider.  I had a crinoline on mine because I was afraid the hoop skirt would be too southern belle.  I think it really depends on the shape of the dress what looks best.

Just thought I’d throw in my two cents.  I’ve worn both a crinoline and a hoop skirt on different ocassions, the crinoline is definitely more comfortable, hoops skirts tend to feel strange to me because there’s basically no fabric of the dress near your legs, it creates a sort of tent like feel.  At least when I wore one that’s what it was like.  Sort of threw me off a little bit.  I’d go for a crinoline if you have a choice.  It’s easier to sit in as well!

It really depends on the cut of your dress and when you’re getting married.  If you were getting married in the summer and wanted a super-full look, I’d say go with the hoop skirt because it will keep you much MUCH cooler.  But a december wedding in Seattle?  go for the crinoline.

I’ll be rockin’ a hoop.

Wedding is at the end of July, so i’m hoping having everthing away from my body will keep me cool.  That’s my grown-up Christmas wish at least 🙂

DecemberBride:  I am wearing an Alfred Angelo 250 ball gown. I have explored this question. I want the maximum fullness under my skirt. A hoop is easier to walk in but harder to sit down in. You need to raise your skirts slightly to sit down. A crinoline is a little warmer but easier to sit down in. I am actually wearing two crinolines. I love the rustling sound as I walk. I think the rustling sound is so bridal and uniquely feminine. A hoop usually shows under your skirt. My maid of honor will help me dress because my gown also  has a cathedral train and, in addition to the two crinolines, I am wearing a laced bridal corset. I feel marvelous in my bridal wear. My corset has garter straps and the pull of the garters on my stockings feels so sexy. I can hardly wait for my husband to reach up under all those frills to take off my bridal garter.  My husband to be is so thrilled with what I have told him about my gown that I have told him that he will put on my crinolines and veil just for fun and to see what I have experienced when we get to the hotel! So, my vote is for crinolines.

One last point…if you make love as we are planning to while you are still in your gown a crinoline will be much sexier than a hoop. Picture being on all fours on the bed. Your husband will lift your skirts up over your back. Which do you think will be sexier? A hoop or a pretty, frilly, rustling crinoline? I guarantee you he will find the crinolines more sexy and attractive. I can hardly wait!
