A crinoline is really just a type of underskirt. Not completely necessary, but it really depends on the dress, and if you think it needs it. For an example, a big ball gown might really need a crinoline, to help it stay floofed out properly, whereas a really tight fitted dress all the way down probably can’t even fit a crinoline under it.

The dress I’m going with is kind of in the middle. Having an underskirt will actually change the look of it, but I could theoretically go either way. I bought one thinking that worst-case, I can sell it if I don’t think I want to actually use it.

If I were in your situation, I’d just try it both ways. Take a few pictures of the dress with a crinoline on, and without. See what you like best!

Would you like your dress to be poofier, and does it have room for a crinoline? Those are the two questions you need to ask to make the decision.  Do you have pictures?

do you want the bottom to be poofier than it already is? if yes, get a crinoline. if no, don’t get a crinoline. they just help fill out the dress a little. i’m using one with my trumpet dress just to make the shape a little more dramatic.
