I’m getting married in June this year and am looking for a European honeymoon destination. We are getting married in Italy as my other half is Sicilian, so we will spend a week in Sicily before moving on to the honeymoon (the honeymoon will be for between 7 – 9 days). We’ve narrowed honeymoon destinations down to Croatia and Montenegro or Santorini/Mykonos.
Being Italian, my fiance loves hot weather, beaches and relaxing. I love beaches, sun and romance, but I also crave doing something a bit different and like site seeing. Plus, I’ve been to mainland Greece before. However, I’m not sure whether Croatia offers romance and beauty, or is ‘special’ enough for a honeymoon (maybe it can be saved for a holiday another year?).
Could anybody offer any advice on which destinations would be better? I’d hope to do a couple of days in Montenegro as well (or Mykonos if we choose Santorini).
Appreciate any help! Thanks

I went to Croatia for my honeymoon! We loved it!! Hvar is simply amazing. We could’ve spent whole 9 days there. We went island hopping around Hvar on a boat we rented, did a wine and dinner tour, went to the beach, laid by the pool etc. We went in mid-July and the weather was hot. We also went to Dubrovnik and that was pretty cool too. We stayed at a really nice hotel 10 min outside of the downtown and was able to take the bus into the city. We chose this based on our travel guide who was stationed in Croatia’s advice. It was much less crowded and you weren’t stuck in the mobs of people. The hotel was beautiful and overlooked the Adriatic Sea. The area we stayed in also had a bunch of other hotels and it’s only little downtown area with GREAT restaurants.

As a gal with a Croatian background, I would totally recommend going to spend time in Croatia! There are plenty of beautiful seaside towns along the Adriatic. I quite liked visiting Rijeka, and Trsat castle is quite cool. I stayed with family while I was there. It was perfectly relaxing. I hope to go back there again soon.

We are choosing Croatia for our honeymoon – Hvar and Dubrovnik, and possibly either Zagreb or Montenegro!!
would love tips or the name of your agent who helped you!

Commenting to follow because I have been dreaming of visiting Croatia my whole life! My maiden name is Krcmar and I think my dad still has some family there. Would love to hear more about travel advice for a Croatian vacation! 🙂

You’ll love it! Spend some extra time in Hvar. Do not go to Split. I wish we wouldn’t have had that on our intinerary. We actually skipped everything there and found a hotel on the beach that had a great pool and laid out and swam all day. We used Zicasso and then they matched you with the local travel agent. I believe they use the same person in each country for where you choose to travel that is local to that country. My person’s name was Andrea Vucinic. You can go directly to her at http://www.speranza-croatia.com/
And probably get a better deal since we went through a “broker” to get to her. She was so easy to deal with a very prompt!

We went to Greece for our honeymoon in September and it was WONDERFUL. We spent time on both Santorini and Mykonos; it’s very easy to get between the two via ferry.
The islands offer lots to do (I highly recommend renting ATVs and exploring the islands), wonderful food and wine, the people are incredibly kind and welcoming and the scenery is absolutely stunning–and both islands are different enough that they feel like different experiences.
I’ve heard wonderful things about Croatia as well, though I have heard it’s a bit harder to get around (but that’s just second-hand info). Either way, the trip will be amazing. If you decide on Greece, I’m happy to suggest specific places.

Thank you so much for the advice! How long would you recommend staying in Hvar? Could you do a whole vacation just there? I’m a newbie traveler so appreciate any/all input!

My DH and I said we could’ve stayed 5-7 days there (if you have stay at a nice hotel – there is a great on there with an amazing pool that overlooks the sea), but only stayed there 3 days and we were really sad to leave. Dubrovnik is really pretty and I would go there and check it out. There is a ton to do there as well. We also rented out own little boat and went aroudn to different islands there as well. The islands are much closer in Hvar though. It’s really easy to get from Durbrovnik to Hvar – We took at high speed ferry and I think it tooko about 2 hours.

I went to Greece this past summer, for the first time! I would have done my honeymoon there but since I am Greek and we are going to make going there a yearly trip I chose to do something different! Santorini is gorgeous .. If you decide on that you should look into Oia as where you should stay when you are there. It is the honeymoon part of the island and is simply gorgeous. Mykonos is a party island lol so if you are looking for a relaxing and then fun partying those two islands are great.
We went to Naxos this past summer and it was absolutely beautiful. It was not commercialized like other islans, and it had the best French fries I have ever tasted. They specialize in potatoes there. The people are so nice and it is so beautiful!!
Good luck, I am sure whatever you do and wherever you go will be amazing!
