I went on a week long Alaskan cruise and didn’t do any of the excursions. You can still get off at the ports and do your own thing! We still went into the towns, took public transportation to some of the touristy spots, went shopping, etc. The excursions are really expensive; you can still have a great time without them 🙂

I would suggest signing up for cruisecritic.com and searching the board for the roll call for the cruise your taking. You will probably meet other people that are going on the same cruise who might want to split the cost of a private tour. Private tours are much more personal, less expensive and could be tailored to your particular needs. Have a great vacation!

I would recommend not booking any shore tours, they are always over priced because you’re booking through the ship.
Get off the boat and do your own thing, theres always locals waiting to take you to the same places as the tour goes for a fraction of the price!

Thanks everyone! That sounds great. I think I will hold off on booking anything; no need to spend a bunch of money now. We are stopping in St. Maarten, St. Thomas, and Nassau. I’ve been to both St. Maarten and St. Thomas when I was younger. We’ve been able to go on some pretty cool trips together and have done some adventurous tours (ziplining, repelling, etc.) so the cruise excursions just didn’t seem to be that great considering we’ve paid the same price to go ziplining with lunch in a rainforest as the cruise charges for an “afternoon beach bash.” I guess we’ll just wait and see where the days take us! 🙂

We try not to plan anything until we get on the boat, and we usually just go on the islands and then figure it out from there. Most things are so expensive on the boat, and you can do the same things for much cheaper directly through the island. The only thing i would tell you to book through the cruise is if its something you can’t find to do on the island, or if its a long one and you might get close to the time that the boat leaves. If you book through the cruise line and you get back late, they have to wait for you. If you book through the island, then they don’t and will leave you if you aren’t back in time
We love to snorkel, and bought our own snorkel sets, so we usually just find some beach to snorkel, or go find a tour that will take us to the best spots. No matter what you want to do, the locals will know the best spots to do it!

i was just in St. Thomas and we did the skyride to paradise point, but other than that we did no excursions. I would love to go to a beach at St. Thomas. I was in St. Maarten a few years back. They have shops and stuff when you get off the ship, but to do anything, you have to take a taxi. We did do an excursion there, to the beach, Divi Little Bay, but i would definitely say go on cruisecritic and find another beach there to go to as there are some nice ones. Just be careful of the nude beaches there!
