What we did was had a small cake for us to cut.  We had cupcakes i think three different kinds.  Then we had cookies, chocolate peanut butter brownies, and one more thing I forget.  I think that even just the cupcakes and one different dessert would be fine.

@alishaloo:  Are you paying?  Is she? How many people?  Might want to include a wee bit of background info.

You can do a cake and punch reception only- totally fine and within proper ettiquete- as long as it is at the proper time of day as in not a meal time. A few different flavors of cupcakes, a few pies/bars/cheescakes/assorted kind of dessert ( 3-6 different types sounds good to me) and a veggie/meat/cheese tray and you are good to go. Very affordable and easy to do.

We’re doing a small cake for us to cut and then just cupcakes for everyone else. We’re doing choc w/white icing, choc with choc icing, white with white icing, and white with choc icing. We’re doing one of those cupcake towers too.

Yeah I think having a bit more than cupcakes would be appreciated and that is not  at all expensive. You can get them pre made at Wal-mart or even do it yourself with very little effort. If the budget is tight set aside $25 a week and by your wedding date you will have a little chunk of change to spend 🙂 A few carrots, pieces of cheese and ranch dip goes a long way.

If cupcakes and punch are the ONLY food available, as a guest I’d be annoyed.  I’d think it was cheap.  If you have some snacks, and cupcakes are the only dessert option, that’s fine.  You don’t need a full-blown dessert buffet.  I like the idea of having a few cupcake flavors, and if they’re presented nicely, they can make for a pretty display.  A veggie tray and a couple hors d’ouves of sorts would be nice.  They don’t even have to be fancy, even a variety of crackers, cheeses, some meats, perhaps some bread and bruschetta.
