jessicastewart11:  I think it could be really cute IF you had someone (like one of the catering staff) manning it like a station. So the guest could pick their cupcake flavor and icing, but the staff would ice if them and they could take it and put their toppings on. I see letting them to everything turning into a hott mess. Otherwise, I’d likely just had several different already made options and let them choose the one they want.

I’m the clutziest person in the world so I would make a complete mess at a cupcake bar.  You should see the mess I make at my place when I make slice and bake cookies.   I would much rather take a premade iced cupcake then standing there trying to figure out what I want while everyone is waiting behind me, then actually try to ice one without embarrasing myself.

So while I don’t think it’s tacky, I agree that it would be messy.

I went to a wedding where they had a made your own ice cream sundae bar and it was a total mess so I image this would be similar.

I’m not sure if someone else has said this, but what about already having the icing on the cupcakes and then people can choose their toppings? Like different kinds of sprinkles, chocolate chips, etc.? I have seen this sort of thing online with ice cream sundae bars, and I think it looks cute! Probably would be much less messy if icing was already on it, and everything was just accessible via spoons.
