Would anyone mind sharing if they had cupcakes at their reception and if so, how much did it cost? I have heard from some that cupcakes are very economical and others say they are more expensive than a cake. Making them ourselves probably won’t be an option. We are planning on having about 110 people at our wedding.
Thanks for your time and insight!

I’m getting our cupcakes made by a woman who does rather fancy cupcakes locally. She has a business making them for weddings and functions etc. They look gorgeous and taste delish! I’ve been quoted $5.50 per cupcake and we’re having around 70 guests. That might be a bit pricey but when you see them you’ll understand! Plus we’re having a 10″ cutting cake made that’s going to cost us $49 (that we’ll cut for photos and then keep for our 1st anniversary – yay!). I figure $430ish is pretty good for a wedding cake and the beauty of cupcakes is that we don’t have to serve them! We’re going to have some on a cake stand for the “wedding cake” and then all of the others will be on trays for people to help themselves. We’ve discussed this with our venue and they’re cool with it. We’ll just provide guests with napkins and a cute sign telling them to help themselves.
One thing to think about that our lovely cupcake lady told us to be careful of is serving costs – some venues charge extra for “serving” your cake – she told us of one poor bride who was charged $8 per head to take the cupcakes the couple had paid for and put them on a little plate with a fork! The horror! This would be the case with a normal wedding cake too – I liked the cupcakes cos it means they don’t HAVE to be served. Plus if you like you could have them double as your favours which would make it VERY economical!
These are what our gorgeous cupcakes will look like – in my opinion it’s a winner! But you have to do your research – goodluck!

I priced out some cupcakes and they were about $4/cupcake, plus the stand. For the places I visited, they were jsut as expensive (if not more) then the cake b/c they are more work. And my venue STILL wanted to charge a cutting fee. Cakes around here can go from $2 a slice, so it wasn’t worth it. I went with 3 half sheet cakes for $60 total and a small, pretty cake for about $75.

The three bakeries I have checked into by me are all $1/cupcake….and the wedding cake is at least $2.25/slice. I think part of the cost depends on what you want on top, but even for something just a little smaller than Miss Sparkelspaniel’s flower, it would still be $1. I would just get some quotes, it’s the best way to find out what cost you are really looking at. And definitely taste any cake you might order.
Have fun and good luck!

My cupcakes were $2.25 I think, maybe $2, for JUMBO cupcakes (they cost a bit extra if you want a filling). They were amazingly tasty too. One of our guests liked them so much that he and his Fiance are doing them for their wedding as well. Just call around to see in your area because I think it really varies accordign to the bakery. I will say though that even a regular sized cupcake is more cake than a slice of actual wedding cake. I didn’t have to pay a cake cutting fee either as a result.

Depending on the bakery and the design you put on your cupcakes, they can range from $1.5 – $5.5 per cupcake.
We had cupcakes for about $2.25 per cupcake. Very simple with a flower on them.
You should be able to negotiate with a venue that tells you they will charge you a cutting fee for cupcakes too.
Overall, however, they aren’t necessarily cheaper. You’ll actually need 1.5 cupcakes per person, because some people take 2.

We are having a cupcake tree, and a mini cake, so that we can cut into. Our baker is also doing the groom’s cake.
We told her we need to feed about 175, our grand total was $700 dollars.
It doesn’t seem too shabby.

Ours are $2.50 per cupcake. A lot less expensive than any cake prices that we were quoted.

We were quoted from 2.00 – 2.50 per cupcake!

One thing that our bakery explained to us was that the more complicated the decoration, the more expensive the cupcake. A cupcake that has just been simply frosted will be cheaper, whereas something with lots of little petals or details will be more expensive. (Because each one is painstakingly piped)… Our baker quoted us $3.50 to $4.50 per cupcake. Also we are renting the stand from her and paying her to set it up and make it look pretty. We also chose to put a little cake on the top for cutting.

Thank you all very much for the insight! I really appreciate it!

We found our baker through craigslist & she is started out her biz so we got a great rate. We had two flavors : Mocha Espresso w/ buttercream icing & crushed vanilla waffers and Italian Creme cupcakes w/ cocunut, nuts and raspberry filling with cream cheese icing. They were $1.75 each and were SO good!
I did go for a very simple swirl since the cupcakes themselves had alot going on in terms of flavor 🙂
Also we DIY our cucpake stand which saved $ as well.
